The Northern Signal - A COMMON SPRING 3/3 Trilogy
A COMMON SPRING
Screenplay — Pages 1–34
1.
FADE IN:
EXT. SVALBARD — ISFJORD — POLAR NIGHT
A harbor beacon sweeps across broken ice. On every turn it discovers the ISFJORD, closer than before.
On the bridge, SIGNE watches depth, ice radar, and a hand-drawn channel supplied by Svalbard.
RUNE
Starboard five degrees.
SIGNE
Channel says three.
RUNE
Channel was surveyed before the pressure ridge.
The hull grinds against ice. Thirty-two volunteers hold silence below decks.
INGRID (RADIO)
Isfjord, harbor light aligned with outer marker. Your range one point four kilometers.
SIGNE
Svalbard, visual on beacon. Two shafts stable.
The light crosses them again.
RUNE
There. Dark water left of the ridge.
Signe turns away from the mapped line and follows what the old captain sees.
CUT TO:
2.
EXT. SVALBARD HARBOR — LATER
Residents wait behind a quarantine line. No one rushes forward as the Isfjord takes the quay.
INGRID stands with YUSUF, LIV, and a medical team in improvised protective gear.
INGRID
Engines off. Gangway remains raised until air and symptom screening.
SIGNE
After forty-one hours, hello to you too.
INGRID
Hello. Engines off.
The engines fall silent. The ship and settlement hear one another breathe.
RUNE
One febrile patient. Me. Known wound infection.
SVALBARD MEDIC
Temperature?
RUNE
Thirty-nine point one. Still charming.
A child on shore holds a sign: WELCOME PEOPLE / WELCOME POWER.
Ingrid reads the cargo manifest through the radio before the first person steps ashore.
3.
INT. SVALBARD — QUARANTINE GYM — NIGHT
Thirty-two arrivals occupy taped squares on a school-gym floor. Portable generators remain sealed outside.
VOLUNTEER
We crossed the sea to sleep two meters apart?
YUSUF
Civilization is mostly disappointing distances.
Signe signs a symptom log. Ingrid checks every cargo seal twice.
SIGNE
Your compressor part repaired our ship. Our generators repair your refrigeration. When does exchange become ownership?
INGRID
When someone stops recording the other side.
Rune is moved into isolation care.
RUNE
If I die, Signe commands the Isfjord.
SIGNE
You are not dying to simplify paperwork.
RUNE
A captain plans contingencies.
SVALBARD MEDIC
A patient removes his boots.
Rune obeys. Authority changes at the taped line.
4.
EXT. GULF OF BOTHNIA — ESTONIAN TUG — DAWN
A tug pushes through new ice. MAARJA stands on deck with ELINA. Finnish coast appears as a low gray line.
ELINA
Is that Finland?
MAARJA
It is land. We verify nations later.
A radio crackles.
SAARA (RADIO)
Baltic convoy, Kemi reception. Alter course four degrees west. Ice pressure on eastern approach.
TUG CAPTAIN
Four west confirmed.
Below, VIKTOR travels in an unlocked cabin under witnessed custody. KASK brings him the morning manifest.
KASK
You could have left at the last harbor.
VIKTOR
And become innocent by distance?
KASK
No.
VIKTOR
Then I am in the correct cabin.
The Finnish coast grows distinct. For the first time, one of the four worlds is about to enter another.
5.
EXT. KEMI HARBOR — MORNING
AINO and ELIAS wait beside a decontamination lane powered by the island grid. The tug ties up.
Maarja steps ashore. She and Aino recognize voices before faces.
AINO
Maarja Tamm?
MAARJA
You sound taller on radio.
AINO
You sound less tired.
MAARJA
Bad equipment.
They almost embrace, then stop at the contamination marker.
LEENA
Outer clothing in red bins. Survey hands, boots, hair. Families remain together unless readings require separation.
Elias meets Kask. Two soldiers with no functional states inspect one another.
ELIAS
Weapons inventory first.
KASK
Civil reception authority?
ELIAS
Joint council.
KASK
Good answer.
Behind them, children enter Finland one dosimeter click at a time.
6.
INT. KEMI SUBSTATION — MACHINE HALL — LATER
Aino presents intake numbers to Kemi, Kalliojärvi, paper-mill, and Baltic delegates.
AINO
Thirteen convoy civilians. Eight former North Road soldiers. Viktor under witnessed custody. Forty-seven mill residents remain off-site.
KEMI DELEGATE
Food horizon falls nine days.
MAARJA
We bring medical supplies, vehicle parts, and coastal maps.
DELEGATE
Maps do not contain calories.
ELINA
Neither do children until later.
Adults look at her.
ELINA
Aino said that on radio.
Aino tries not to smile.
ELIAS
Housing can rotate between powered sites. Labor assignments require consent and skills survey.
KASK
My soldiers can secure routes.
MAARJA
They can request route work with everyone else.
Kask nods. A command becomes an application.
7.
INT. KEMI — WITNESSED CUSTODY ROOM — DAY
Viktor sits at an ordinary table. LIISA joins by radio. A Finnish civilian recorder opens a new file.
RECORDER
Custody basis: admitted falsification, material witness, pending community justice process.
VIKTOR
Correct.
RECORDER
Restrictions?
MAARJA
No weapons. Movement logged. Engineering work supervised. Radio access by hearing schedule.
VIKTOR
I request vehicle-repair duty.
LIISA (RADIO)
Work does not reduce testimony.
VIKTOR
I know.
LIISA (RADIO)
You are beginning to.
Elias places Viktor’s old Russian name tags on the table, collected through the journey.
ELIAS
Why keep these?
VIKTOR
Because discarded names looked too much like permission.
The recorder bags each tag as evidence, not sentiment.
8.
INT. KYIV METRO — PLATFORM CLINIC — DAY
A medicine case arrives bearing seals from Moscow, Klin, Rzhev, Velikiye Luki, Daugavpils, and Depot Seven.
OLENA checks the temperature strip. Green.
SASHA
Thirty courses. Every station signed.
OLENA
Twenty-nine.
One vial is missing. The public manifest explains: child treated at Rzhev, physician code attached.
OLENA
Twenty-nine and one patient.
She keys the radio.
OLENA
Moscow cargo, Kyiv confirms receipt. Temperature maintained. Seal chain intact. One documented use accepted.
MIKHAIL (RADIO)
Moscow confirms your confirmation.
SASHA
Romance survives.
Olena permits the smallest smile.
OLENA
Tell Natalia the customs outbreak is responding.
MIKHAIL (RADIO)
Tell Halyna the filter drawings arrived.
Medicine ends a journey by creating another exchange.
9.
INT. MOSCOW METRO — PUBLIC PLATFORM — SAME
Mikhail’s report is posted beside the reduced antibiotic inventory. NATALIA reads Kyiv’s confirmation aloud.
RESIDENT
We sent thirty. They received twenty-nine.
NATALIA
One treated a child on the route. Documented.
RESIDENT
Not our child.
ZORIN
The truck would not have passed Rzhev without that shelter.
RESIDENT
So medicine is toll now?
MIKHAIL
No. Need occurred in front of the cargo. The physician recorded it. We review whether the use was appropriate.
Anya arrives with a strip of encoded data.
ANYA
Something answered above the horizon.
NATALIA
Radio?
ANYA
Not exactly.
She lays down a satellite packet header dated three days after the exchange.
ANYA
A spacecraft has been storing messages.
10.
INT. MOSCOW METRO — RADIO ALCOVE — LATER
Anya reconstructs the burst. Mikhail and Zorin watch under civilian observation.
ANYA
Polar-orbit emergency relay. It receives short packets, stores them, dumps when a ground station requests.
MIKHAIL
Which ground station?
ANYA
Header says MSK-NORTH FOUR. Military weather complex near Murmansk.
ZORIN
Russian strategic communications annex.
NATALIA
Operational?
ANYA
Someone commanded a downlink yesterday.
The next packet is corrupted but contains place codes far beyond Europe.
ANYA
Nunavut. Patagonia. Hokkaido. Maybe.
MIKHAIL
Can we answer?
ANYA
Not without station keys or a compatible uplink.
Zorin recognizes the command suffix.
ZORIN
North Four belonged to Northern Fleet logistics.
A name no one says yet enters the room.
11.
INT. SVALBARD — POWER STATION — DAY
Portable generators from the Isfjord stand connected but unloaded. YUSUF tests grounding while Tromsø technicians watch.
TECHNICIAN
Two hundred kilowatts continuous if fuel quality holds.
YUSUF
Fuel horizon?
TECHNICIAN
Twenty-three days at full load.
INGRID
We do not run full load.
Archive compressor two starts on the new bus. It shrieks, then trips.
YUSUF
Mechanical fault. Not power.
INGRID
The seal?
YUSUF
Shaft bearing misaligned. New seal would fail in hours.
On the board, archive temperature climbs.
TECHNICIAN
We can move refrigeration to portable cold rooms.
INGRID
For how many accessions?
TECHNICIAN
Five percent.
Power arrived. It cannot solve the shape of the failure.
12.
INT. SVALBARD — SEED VAULT — NIGHT
Ingrid walks aisles containing more varieties than the settlement can keep cold. Signe follows with a thermal map.
SIGNE
Zone C warms first. We choose priority accessions and consolidate.
INGRID
Priority by what future?
SIGNE
The one with limited refrigeration.
INGRID
Staples, regional diversity, rare lines, research populations—each answer erases another.
SIGNE
Then do not choose alone.
Ingrid looks down the perfect shelves.
INGRID
The deposit agreements prohibit unilateral redistribution.
SIGNE
The depositors may be dead.
INGRID
That does not make us owners.
SIGNE
No. It makes ownership an unanswered question with a temperature.
A warning light changes from amber to red.
13.
INT. NORTHERN NETWORK — EMERGENCY WINDOW — INTERCUT
INGRID
Svalbard requests a distributed-accession council. Archive Zone C reaches viability threshold in eighteen days.
EEVA
Do not ship seed into unverified cultivation rooms.
AINO
Could we move refrigeration equipment instead?
YUSUF
Bearing fabrication requires machine alignment tools we lack.
SIGNE
Tromsø can align it if the Isfjord returns with the shaft assembly.
INGRID
Removing the assembly warms Zone C faster.
OLENA
Then triage begins before removal.
INGRID
Seeds are not patients.
OLENA
No. Patients can tell you what they need.
Silence.
MAARJA
Who speaks for the places that deposited them?
NATALIA
Anyone still answering from those places.
The network schedules its first assembly larger than survival logistics.
14.
INT. KEMI PAPER MILL — BIOREMEDIATION LAB — DAY
EEVA opens culture jars inside a makeshift clean hood. Aino watches the first rye roots colonized correctly.
EEVA
This tray can move to the mine greenhouse trial.
AINO
The mine has no greenhouse.
EEVA
It has lamps, water, waste heat, and people who enjoy saying no.
AINO
A greenhouse.
Maarja enters with Baltic soil records saved on the ambulance tablet.
MAARJA
Farm surveys. Peat, sandy loam, drainage, pre-war crop rotations.
EEVA
These are more valuable than seed catalogs.
MAARJA
Try telling farmers their dirt is data.
They align Baltic soil profiles with Svalbard accessions.
AINO
If seed comes south, custody stays distributed. No one site receives the only viable sample.
EEVA
A seed commons.
MAARJA
A spring charter.
The name arrives before the institution.
15.
INT. KALLIOJÄRVI MINE — ABANDONED ORE HALL — DAY
Aino, Elias, and Oskari inspect the dark processing hall sacrificed for the transmitter.
OSKARI
You said ore controls cannot restart.
AINO
Not as a mill.
She points to sodium lamps, water lines, ventilation ducts, and warm return air.
AINO
But plants do not require crushers.
ELIAS
They require power we barely have.
AINO
Kemi grid can carry seasonal surplus if we repair the feeder.
OSKARI
And dirt?
AINO
Eeva says substrate, not dirt.
OSKARI
That costs more syllables.
Leena tapes a sign to the control board: GREENHOUSE TRIAL — PEOPLE FIRST, PLANTS SECOND, MOLD LAST.
ELIAS
Who approved this?
LEENA
The people who will build it are meeting tonight.
Elias smiles at being correctly excluded from command.
16.
INT. KYIV METRO — QUIET PLATFORM — NIGHT
Olena listens to the satellite packet rebroadcast by Anya. Fragments scroll: names, coordinates, dates.
ANYA (RADIO)
Next group may be Kyiv routing. Corruption forty percent.
A sequence emerges: T. KOVALENKO / DNIPRO AUX / ALIVE DAY 6.
Olena stops breathing.
SASHA
Taras?
OLENA
Could be another Kovalenko.
ANYA (RADIO)
Personal initial T. Origin code matches eastern auxiliary shelter.
SASHA
He was alive on Day Six.
OLENA
We are past Day Thirty.
Hope arrives expired and refuses to leave.
ANYA (RADIO)
North Four may hold newer packets not yet dumped.
OLENA
Who controls North Four?
The answer comes on another frequency.
RASMUS (RADIO)
That depends on what you mean by control.
17.
INT. MURMANSK NORTH FOUR GROUND STATION — SAME
A radome turns beneath aurora. Inside, RASMUS stands among surviving Russian technicians and his reduced loyalist column.
RASMUS
Northern Network, this is North Four. Satellite downlink operational. Uplink intermittent.
INT. MULTIPLE LOCATIONS — INTERCUT
Every radio room stills.
AINO
Verify station.
RASMUS
Satellite orbit epoch, checksum, and tomorrow’s pass schedule follow.
Anya checks. Valid.
OLENA
Release all Kyiv packets.
RASMUS
The archive contains sixteen thousand messages from at least nineteen regions. Unfiltered release creates panic, false claims, and targeting data.
NATALIA
So you appoint yourself editor.
RASMUS
No. Custodian.
Ingrid hears her old word return wearing a uniform.
18.
INT. SVALBARD — BEACON CONTROL ROOM — CONTINUOUS
INGRID
Custody requires access rules and independent copies.
RASMUS (RADIO)
Agreed. North Four proposes a Continuity Secretariat to verify identities, allocate satellite time, and coordinate reconstruction.
AINO
Selected by whom?
RASMUS (RADIO)
Contributing regions weighted by population, infrastructure, and security capacity.
MAARJA
Weapons receive votes.
RASMUS (RADIO)
Weapons defend ground stations.
OLENA
Release the Kyiv messages.
RASMUS (RADIO)
Send a delegation to North Four. Participate in verification.
He is not demanding surrender. He is designing a system that makes access conditional on his permanence.
INGRID
How many messages have you withheld?
RASMUS (RADIO)
All unverified data remains protected.
The world has returned as locked mail.
19.
INT. MOSCOW METRO — COUNCIL CHAMBER — NIGHT
ZORIN
North Four includes strategic uplink encryption and polar surveillance.
NATALIA
Can Rasmus launch weapons?
ZORIN
Not from a weather relay. But he can see movement, receive messages, perhaps command surviving logistics satellites.
MIKHAIL
And impersonate continuity government.
ZORIN
He does not need to impersonate one if others recognize him.
ANYA
We can build a second downlink.
ZORIN
With an antenna, orbital data, keys, stable time, and power.
ANYA
So five problems.
Mikhail unfolds the old Arctic network map.
MIKHAIL
Svalbard research station had polar tracking hardware. Finland has power and machine tools. Kyiv has timing references from rail control.
NATALIA
And Moscow?
ANYA
Me.
A daughter names herself as capacity, not property.
20.
INT. KYIV METRO — SHELTER ASSEMBLY — NIGHT
Taras’s Day Six packet is projected beside the North Four proposal.
ASSEMBLY MEMBER
Send Olena. Rasmus will release the archive to family.
OLENA
That is why I cannot be the only Kyiv delegate.
SASHA
He has a message you need.
OLENA
He has thousands of messages everyone needs.
ASSEMBLY MEMBER
You would leave your husband unread?
OLENA
I would refuse to make his life the price of everyone else’s silence.
The words cost her physically.
IRYNA
Then we send three delegates. Medical, technical, and elected. Their mandate is public.
OLENA
And the delegation goes only if North Four transmits a complete index first.
They write the condition where hope cannot secretly amend it.
21.
INT. KEMI SUBSTATION — COUNCIL ASSEMBLY — NIGHT
Delegates from Kemi, Kalliojärvi, the mill, and Baltic convoy debate North Four.
ELIAS
We need satellite weather, fallout mapping, and survivor locations.
MAARJA
We needed roads. Rasmus made need his title.
KASK
North Four has Russian military staff. If abandoned, another force takes it.
AINO
So we do not abandon it. We duplicate it.
DELEGATE
With what antenna?
Veikko rolls out Kemi’s surviving air-defense radar maintenance drawings.
VEIKKO
Phased array is damaged. Pedestal and drive survive.
ANYA (RADIO)
Convert feed, add low-noise amplifier, synchronize with satellite pass.
AINO
Power?
VEIKKO
Three hundred kilowatts during acquisition.
Again, light, water, heat, and communication occupy one bus.
22.
EXT. KEMI RADAR SITE — DAWN
Aino, Elias, Kask, Maarja, and Viktor approach a snow-buried radar dish. Its face is scarred but upright.
ELIAS
Military site. Possible unexploded ordnance.
VIKTOR
Russian targeting doctrine prioritized this class.
KASK
Useful information from the man who helped target it.
VIKTOR
Yes.
No defense. They proceed.
Inside the equipment shelter, frost covers intact waveguides.
AINO
Pedestal gearbox free. Control cabinets dry.
MAARJA
Can it hear the satellite?
AINO
It was built to hear something less cooperative.
Viktor finds a scorched targeting chart bearing his former unit’s code.
He hands it to Kask, then continues inventorying parts.
23.
INT. SVALBARD — ARCHIVE ASSEMBLY — DAY
Seed-depositor regions answer where possible. Poland, Sweden, Ukraine, Finland, Norway. Many remain silent.
INGRID
Proposal: duplicate threatened accessions across verified cultivation nodes. No node receives the only surviving sample. Records remain public.
POLISH VOICE
Who authorizes use if our institute cannot answer?
EEVA
A temporary commons board with regional and cultivation representation.
SECURITY CHIEF
And if a node breeds proprietary stock?
MAARJA
Property claims last.
OLENA
Food needs first.
INGRID
History and origin always retained.
She places the archive key on the table again.
INGRID
The vault is not humanity’s government.
A first draft appears: THE SPRING COMMONS.
24.
INT. MURMANSK NORTH FOUR — SATELLITE CONTROL — DAY
Technicians decode another pass. A world map populates with stored-message clusters.
TECHNICIAN
Kemi radar emitted test pulses.
RASMUS
Can it acquire the relay?
TECHNICIAN
With orbital elements and timing, eventually.
RASMUS
Then timing becomes protected data.
A Russian station director, IRINA MARKOVA, 50s, looks up.
IRINA
Emergency-relay protocol requires open orbit publication.
RASMUS
Protocol assumed functioning states.
IRINA
Protocol assumed emergencies.
She copies the orbital solution onto a maintenance terminal.
RASMUS
Director Markova, access is now compartmented.
IRINA
By whose order?
RASMUS
The people keeping the station alive.
Several technicians stop typing. He has borrowed their labor as consent.
25.
INT. KALLIOJÄRVI MINE — ORE HALL — DAY
Residents build greenhouse benches from conveyor frames. Eeva’s substrate fills shallow trays.
OSKARI
How many calories?
EEVA
For the first month? Almost none.
OSKARI
Then why grow it?
EEVA
To learn before hunger asks the question.
Leena places masking-tape names on each tray: BUILDER, CULTURE, SEED ORIGIN, WATER LOT.
AINO
No seed until Svalbard authorizes duplicates.
MINER
We are building empty gardens.
AINO
We are building somewhere a seed can arrive without dying.
Elias joins workers hanging lamps. No uniformed priority, no command platform.
ELIAS
This circuit used to run a crusher.
AINO
Now it grows lettuce.
ELIAS
History will be embarrassed.
26.
INT. KEMI RADAR SITE — CONTROL ROOM — DAY
Anya’s voice guides Aino and Veikko through converting the radar feed.
ANYA (RADIO)
Remove transmit protection limiter. We need receive sensitivity, not pulse power.
VEIKKO
Limiter prevents the front end from burning.
ANYA (RADIO)
We are not transmitting.
Viktor studies Cyrillic annotations on a captured module.
VIKTOR
This is frequency-agile. Russian countermeasure package.
KASK
Can it intercept the satellite?
VIKTOR
It can follow North Four’s uplink and derive timing.
Everyone understands the moral cost: use military surveillance knowledge to break a monopoly.
AINO
Receive only. All derived data published.
VIKTOR
Recorded.
He connects the module under two witnesses.
The dish begins its first slow turn toward an empty piece of sky.
27.
INT. NORTHERN NETWORK — GENERAL ASSEMBLY — INTERCUT
NATALIA
Condition one: North Four publishes full message index without content redaction beyond personal medical privacy.
OLENA
Condition two: delegations selected locally, mandates public, no hostage access.
INGRID
Condition three: orbit and protocol data mirrored to independent ground stations.
MAARJA
Condition four: security capacity receives no permanent voting weight.
RASMUS
Then those who defend the station can be outvoted by those consuming it.
KASK
Defense is a function. Not a class.
RASMUS
Spoken by a commander whose convoy survived because soldiers obeyed.
KASK
And because a medic did not.
Rasmus hears one of his own lessons used against him.
RASMUS
North Four rejects compulsory disclosure before identity verification.
ANYA
Then Kemi will listen for itself.
28.
INT. MURMANSK NORTH FOUR — DIRECTOR’S OFFICE — NIGHT
Irina opens the maintenance terminal. A copy of orbital elements waits unsent.
TECHNICIAN
He monitors uplink traffic.
IRINA
Maintenance telemetry is not uplink traffic.
TECHNICIAN
That distinction may not stop soldiers.
IRINA
It stopped a bridge from becoming a government.
She encodes orbital data as a compressor-fault report addressed to Svalbard.
TECHNICIAN
If Kemi receives it, North Four loses exclusivity.
IRINA
North Four gains redundancy.
She schedules the packet for the next satellite pass.
TECHNICIAN
And the stored messages?
IRINA
Index first. Content after consent and verification.
The technician joins her. Custodianship begins by making itself replaceable.
29.
INT. KYIV METRO — SIGNAL ROOM — NIGHT
Olena sits alone before Taras’s partial packet. Mikhail’s voice arrives softly.
MIKHAIL (RADIO)
I can ask Zorin for North Four encryption history.
OLENA
Do not trade favors for my message.
MIKHAIL (RADIO)
I did not say trade.
OLENA
Men who controlled information rarely say trade.
He accepts the blow.
MIKHAIL (RADIO)
Then I will publish the request and whatever answer comes.
OLENA
Why help?
MIKHAIL (RADIO)
Because a message should not belong to the person holding the door.
Olena looks at Taras’s name.
OLENA
If he is dead, the full packet does not change it.
MIKHAIL (RADIO)
No.
OLENA
If he is alive, it changes everything.
MIKHAIL (RADIO)
Yes.
They leave the uncertainty unsoftened.
30.
EXT. KEMI RADAR SITE — NIGHT
The converted dish tracks a predicted satellite pass using incomplete public elements. Wind pushes against the pedestal.
VEIKKO
Azimuth drive lag point four degrees.
AINO
Lead command.
ANYA (RADIO)
Signal should rise in twelve seconds.
The waterfall display remains empty.
ELIAS
Power draw approaching limit.
AINO
Hold twenty seconds.
ELIAS
Village heat bus is sagging.
AINO
Ten seconds.
A whisper appears, then vanishes.
ANYA (RADIO)
That was it. Timing error six seconds.
AINO
Next orbit?
ANYA (RADIO)
Ninety-eight minutes.
Aino powers down. The village lights recover.
AINO
We missed without freezing anyone.
Failure becomes a repeatable procedure.
31.
INT. SVALBARD — ARCHIVE LAB — SAME
A maintenance packet arrives through the emergency relay: COMPRESSOR FAULT / NORTH FOUR.
LIV
North Four reports a compressor?
YUSUF
Everyone has our problems now.
Ingrid opens the attachment. Orbital elements fill the screen.
INGRID
Not a compressor.
A signed line: IRINA MARKOVA / STATION DIRECTOR / REDUNDANCY IS CUSTODY.
INGRID
North Four has an internal witness.
LIV
Send to Kemi?
Ingrid sees the deposit agreement icon warning against redistribution.
INGRID
Publish to every verified station.
YUSUF
That is not very custodial.
INGRID
It is the first custodial act available.
The orbital solution enters the open network.
32.
INT. MURMANSK NORTH FOUR — SATELLITE CONTROL — SAME
An alarm marks unauthorized data dissemination. Rasmus enters as Irina closes the terminal.
RASMUS
You released protected orbital data.
IRINA
Emergency protocol requires it.
RASMUS
You endangered this station.
IRINA
I made destroying it insufficient.
Soldiers move toward her. Technicians stand between them and the consoles.
RASMUS
Step aside.
TECHNICIAN
Under whose authority?
RASMUS
The authority keeping you alive.
IRINA
We kept the station alive before he arrived.
The soldiers look at the people who know which cooling pump keeps the satellite rack from burning.
RASMUS
Director Markova is confined pending review.
IRINA
Record the order.
33.
INT. KEMI RADAR SITE — SECOND PASS — PRE-DAWN
The dish moves with corrected timing. Power meters climb. Aino watches the village heat bus hold.
ANYA (RADIO)
Acquisition in five. Four. Three.
The spectrum blooms with a clean descending tone.
VEIKKO
Locked.
Data pours in: the same message index North Four withheld.
AINO
Mirror immediately. Raw first, interpretation second.
Moscow, Kyiv, Svalbard, and Baltic receivers begin copying.
ANYA (RADIO)
I see the Kyiv routing table.
OLENA (RADIO)
Do not prioritize mine privately.
ANYA (RADIO)
Public filter: all Kyiv origin packets, chronological.
The ground station is no longer singular.
RASMUS (RADIO)
Kemi, cease unauthorized interception.
AINO
We are receiving an emergency broadcast.
34.
INT. NORTHERN NETWORK — DAWN
Message indices spread across walls and screens. Names from nineteen regions. Dates. Status codes. Thousands of unfinished lives.
ANYA
Kyiv packet group complete. Content keys follow on next pass if North Four does not revoke.
IRINA (RADIO, FAINT)
Keys scheduled. Station staff request external witness and nonviolent access negotiation.
NATALIA
North Four is not one man.
KASK
Nor are its soldiers.
INGRID
The Spring Commons assembly will include message custody. Seeds and signals follow the same rule: no single keeper.
MAARJA
And no delegation travels under secret mandate.
OLENA
Kyiv will send delegates after the full index is mirrored.
RASMUS
You are constructing government by radio.
AINO
No. We are constructing the conditions under which people can govern themselves.
Outside Kemi, the first pale edge of returning Arctic daylight touches the radar dish.
CUT TO BLACK.
35.
INT. KEMI RADAR SITE — CONTROL ROOM — CONTINUOUS
Satellite data floods three improvised drives. ANYA organizes the decoding from Moscow while AINO guards the power budget.
ANYA (RADIO)
Index mirrored. Content keys expected next pass.
VEIKKO
North Four can revoke them.
ANYA (RADIO)
Irina scheduled the command before confinement.
A pulse of interference smears the downlink.
AINO
Dish fault?
VEIKKO
Signal-to-noise dropped across the band.
VIKTOR
Intentional uplink noise.
KASK
Jamming?
VIKTOR
From North Four’s antenna pattern.
RASMUS (RADIO)
Kemi is operating without coordination and interfering with emergency traffic.
AINO
We are receiving. You are transmitting noise.
The argument is visible in the spectrum.
36.
INT. MURMANSK NORTH FOUR — SATELLITE CONTROL — SAME
RASMUS orders a technician to raise interference power. The technician keeps one hand off the control.
TECHNICIAN
Continuous uplink will overheat the final amplifier.
RASMUS
Burst during Kemi acquisition only.
TECHNICIAN
We also corrupt the emergency relay.
RASMUS
We protect it from unauthorized extraction.
IRINA, confined behind a glass office, writes on paper: AMPLIFIER COOLING SHARED WITH ARCHIVE RACK.
TECHNICIAN
Archive cooling shares the loop.
RASMUS
Temperature margin?
TECHNICIAN
Four degrees.
RASMUS
Use two.
He converts thermal safety into political budget.
Irina holds her warning to the glass. No one meets her eyes.
37.
INT. KYIV METRO — SIGNAL ROOM — SAME
OLENA watches the corrupted pass. TARAS KOVALENKO remains one line in an unopened index.
SASHA
We can ask Rasmus for the key privately.
OLENA
He asked for a delegation.
SASHA
You want the message.
OLENA
That is why the request must stay public.
The signal clears for four seconds. A fragment decodes.
T. KOVALENKO / DNIPRO AUX / DAY 24 / WATER RISING / 41 ALIVE
SASHA
Day Twenty-Four.
OLENA
Ten days ago.
ANYA (RADIO)
Location hash incomplete. I need the content key.
OLENA
Put every Dnipro Auxiliary packet ahead of no one. Decode by date and danger.
She writes TARAS among forty-one names, not above them.
38.
INT. SVALBARD — ARCHIVE ASSEMBLY — DAY
The Spring Commons draft fills a wall. Depositor regions vote by radio where they can; silent regions receive reserved representation.
INGRID
Threatened Zone C contains twelve thousand accessions. Portable cold capacity holds six hundred.
POLISH VOICE
Staple crops first.
EEVA
Staples without local adaptation fail.
UKRAINIAN VOICE
Duplicates must include drought and salinity lines.
MAARJA (RADIO)
Baltic nodes request rye, barley, field pea, brassica, and forage varieties—not prestige crops.
SECURITY CHIEF
Every shipment reduces vault redundancy.
INGRID
Every duplicate increases species redundancy.
She writes the first rule herself.
INGRID
No accession leaves as the only known viable sample.
The vault begins becoming a network instead of a shrine.
39.
INT. KALLIOJÄRVI MINE — ORE HALL — DAY
Greenhouse benches cover a fraction of the vast hall. Eeva tests airflow with smoke while OSKARI logs temperatures.
OSKARI
Twenty-one at lamps. Twelve at floor.
EEVA
Too much gradient. Roots cold, leaves warm, fungus happy.
AINO
Redirect crusher-duct return air under benches.
MINER
Crusher fan draws forty kilowatts.
AINO
Run only with Kemi surplus.
A water sample arrives from spring snowmelt at the mine entrance. The meter clicks faster than yesterday.
LEENA
Surface drainage activity doubled.
AINO
Particulates?
LEENA
Cesium signature rising. Thaw is mobilizing fallout.
Beyond the sealed portal, winter begins to move.
40.
INT. KEMI SUBSTATION — HYDROLOGY TABLE — LATER
Aino overlays satellite snow cover, wind deposition, river basins, and settlement maps.
VEIKKO
These images are six days old.
AINO
Better than no watershed.
EEVA
First melt pulse carries the concentrated surface layer into streams.
ELIAS
Kemi intake is upstream of the harbor.
AINO
And downstream of three fallout bands.
MAARJA
Baltic farms will see the same in drainage ditches.
KASK
Road dose maps become water maps.
Aino traces rivers south and east.
AINO
Kyiv and Moscow metros are below damaged storm systems. Svalbard has snow storage beside the settlement reservoir.
EEVA
Spring is not relief. It is transport.
The season itself becomes the next convoy.
41.
INT. NORTHERN NETWORK — WATER WINDOW — INTERCUT
AINO
All stations: sample first flush separately. Do not route meltwater into shelter cisterns.
MIKHAIL
Moscow flood gates drain into river interceptors. Most pumps are offline.
SASHA
Kyiv maintenance sumps connect to street culverts. We need gate positions.
YUSUF
Svalbard snow dump lies uphill of drinking-water intake.
MAARJA
Baltic convoy has farm drainage records and portable conductivity meters.
OLENA
Conductivity does not measure radionuclides.
EEVA
No, but it tracks salt and runoff changes. Pair it with dose samples.
RASMUS
North Four has current multispectral imagery.
AINO
Publish it.
RASMUS
Join the Continuity Secretariat.
OLENA
Water does not wait for your constitution.
Rasmus holds maps while basements begin filling.
42.
INT. MURMANSK NORTH FOUR — DIRECTOR’S OFFICE — DAY
Irina hears the water emergency through the glass. A guard brings food.
IRINA
Snowmelt imagery is on environmental channel three.
GUARD
Rasmus classified current products.
IRINA
Your family is in Severomorsk.
The guard stops.
IRINA
Runoff plume reaches their intake in thirty hours.
GUARD
Can you prove it?
IRINA
Open the channel and see.
He unlocks her office but keeps his rifle.
GUARD
You transmit the local warning only.
IRINA
And the source image, so they can verify.
GUARD
Local.
IRINA
Water leaves local.
He follows her to the console. Personal fear defeats compartmentalization.
43.
INT. MURMANSK NORTH FOUR — SATELLITE CONTROL — CONTINUOUS
Irina opens environmental channel three. A radioactive-sediment model appears across northern watersheds.
TECHNICIAN
If we broadcast raw imagery, Kemi mirrors it.
IRINA
That is the purpose of broadcast.
Rasmus enters.
RASMUS
Step away.
GUARD
Severomorsk intake is threatened.
RASMUS
We issue warning after verification.
IRINA
The satellite already verified snowmelt and plume movement. Uncertainty bands are attached.
RASMUS
You do not release strategic hydrology to unknown stations.
GUARD
My children drink there.
Another guard lowers his weapon.
IRINA
Transmit source image, model, and uncertainty.
The data leaves North Four before Rasmus can make urgency obedient.
44.
INT. KEMI RADAR SITE — CONTROL ROOM — SAME
The runoff map arrives complete. Aino expands the Kalliojärvi basin.
AINO
Peak first flush forty-eight to sixty hours.
VEIKKO
Mine portal drainage enters settling pond, then shaft fracture network.
ELIAS
Can we berm it?
AINO
Frozen ground. Surface water will seek every cable trench.
EEVA
Divert to open pit. Sacrifice the pit lake as contaminated storage.
AINO
That destroys future dewatering and ore access.
MAARJA
Future ore or present water.
Aino studies the mine she once measured as a career.
AINO
Open-pit diversion. Line the emergency spillway with mill clay. Publish downstream warning.
ELIAS
Council authorization?
AINO
Emergency proposal in ten minutes. Work begins on reversible sections now.
Authority and urgency no longer require the same mistake.
45.
EXT. KALLIOJÄRVI MINE — OPEN PIT — DAY
Tracked loaders carve a diversion channel through snow and waste rock. Soldiers, miners, Baltic drivers, and mill workers share the line.
KASK
Lower berm needs another meter.
MINER
Ground is ice over tailings.
VIKTOR
Anchor with vehicle mats.
ELIAS
You remain supervised.
VIKTOR
Then supervise quickly.
They lay armored recovery mats as reinforcement.
Maarja surveys workers for contamination. One reserve soldier refuses an Estonian instruction until Elias repeats it.
ELIAS
Next time, hear the first language.
SOLDIER
Sir.
ELIAS
No sir. She is the route-safety lead.
Snowmelt trickles beneath the unfinished berm.
46.
INT. MOSCOW METRO — FLOOD CONTROL GALLERY — DAY
MIKHAIL and ZORIN descend to manual storm gates. Water already seeps around cable penetrations.
MIKHAIL
Gate Four diverts to a river interceptor.
ZORIN
And floods Sector Seven access.
MIKHAIL
Sector Seven evacuated after the fire.
ZORIN
Officially.
They hear metal striking metal beyond the gate.
MIKHAIL
People?
ZORIN
Or debris.
Three knocks. Pause. Two.
ZORIN
Old civil-defense response code.
MIKHAIL
How many unofficial sectors did your committee omit?
ZORIN
Enough to make the map calm.
Opening the diversion may drown survivors they did not count.
47.
INT. MOSCOW METRO — FLOOD CONTROL GALLERY — CONTINUOUS
Mikhail drills a voice port. Cold air and frightened shouting burst through.
VOICE
Nine people. Two unable to walk. Water at platform edge.
MIKHAIL
Gate Four must open in six hours or this sector floods from the other side.
VOICE
Where do we go?
Zorin unfolds a maintenance map.
ZORIN
Cable corridor to Sector Five. Locked at both ends.
MIKHAIL
Your legacy credentials?
ZORIN
Revoked.
MIKHAIL
Good government.
ZORIN
Inconvenient timing.
Zorin keys the public channel.
ZORIN
Moscow council, request witnessed temporary credential restoration for rescue only.
He asks for the key instead of taking it.
48.
INT. KYIV METRO — STORM SUMP — DAY
SASHA and rail crews inspect a sluice wheel welded by corrosion. Water rises around their boots.
SASHA
If we force it, stem may shear.
OLENA
If we do not?
SASHA
Platform clinic gets runoff in fourteen hours.
A new satellite packet decodes on Olena’s portable receiver.
DNIPRO AUX / DAY 31 / MOVING WEST SERVICE TUNNEL / MEDICAL 6 / TOTAL 37
OLENA
Day Thirty-One. Three days ago.
SASHA
West service tunnel joins this drainage branch.
They look at the welded gate.
OLENA
If we open it, where does water go?
SASHA
Toward them.
OLENA
If we leave it?
SASHA
Toward us.
Taras and the clinic occupy opposite sides of one valve.
49.
INT. KYIV METRO — SHELTER ASSEMBLY — LATER
The drainage map and Taras packet are public. Olena stands among families of thirty-seven unknown survivors.
ASSEMBLY MEMBER
Open the gate after rescue team reaches the west branch.
SASHA
Gate may not close again. Opening early protects our clinic but accelerates flow toward them.
OLENA
We reverse two ventilation fans and use the dry service duct as evacuation path.
RAIL WORKER
Duct crosses a collapsed station.
OLENA
Then survey from both ends.
ASSEMBLY MEMBER
You cannot lead. You are not neutral.
Olena receives the truth without protest.
OLENA
Correct. Sasha leads technical survey. I remain medical coordinator. Every decision recorded.
She relinquishes command of the operation that may find her husband.
50.
INT. SVALBARD — AIRPORT HANGAR — DAY
Six hundred duplicate accessions enter portable cold cases. Each box bears origin, viability, and custody route.
INGRID
First flight: Kemi cultivation node, then Polish and Ukrainian allocations when routes verify.
SECURITY CHIEF
Kemi receives disproportionate access.
INGRID
Kemi receives duplicates suited to its latitude and built capacity.
KARI
Cargo mass within limit. Return load?
LEENA (RADIO)
One Svalbard medical patient may transfer to Tromsø, not Kemi.
KARI
Then Tromsø first, Kemi second. Fuel margin nine percent.
SIGNE
Isfjord can carry remaining equipment, but not before runoff clears harbor storage.
Ingrid places the Spring Commons charter in the first case.
INGRID
The paper travels with the seeds.
YUSUF
Which is more fragile?
INGRID
The paper.
51.
INT. MURMANSK NORTH FOUR — COOLING PLANT — DAY
The uplink amplifier alarm climbs. A technician reduces jamming power. Rasmus restores it.
TECHNICIAN
Coolant outlet forty-three degrees.
RASMUS
Maximum forty-eight.
TECHNICIAN
Archive inlet already thirty-one.
RASMUS
We need one more pass.
Irina arrives under guard.
IRINA
At thirty-five, storage controllers begin dropping drives.
RASMUS
Kemi stops interception, we stop countermeasure.
IRINA
They already have the index.
RASMUS
Not the world’s trust.
IRINA
Neither do you.
A pump begins cavitating. The sound is unmistakable to everyone except the order.
TECHNICIAN
Air in loop. Shut amplifier now.
RASMUS
After pass acquisition.
52.
INT. KEMI RADAR SITE — CONTROL ROOM — SAME
The next pass rises through interference. Content keys arrive in damaged blocks.
ANYA (RADIO)
Kyiv key group thirty percent. Environmental group complete.
AINO
North Four temperature telemetry is embedded.
VEIKKO
Archive inlet thirty-four and climbing.
AINO
They are cooking the storage rack to jam us.
ELIAS
Let it fail and Rasmus loses control.
AINO
Everyone loses sixteen thousand messages.
She opens a direct engineering channel.
AINO
North Four, Kemi offers cooling diagnosis. Stop uplink amplifier and transmit pump pressures.
RASMUS
Cease acquisition first.
AINO
No. Raw archive mirrors first. Your station survives second. Your authority is not in the maintenance sequence.
Rasmus must choose between monopoly and the machine that creates it.
53.
INT. MURMANSK NORTH FOUR — SATELLITE CONTROL — CONTINUOUS
A drive controller drops offline. Thousands of messages vanish from the local index.
TECHNICIAN
Rack Three lost.
IRINA
Shutdown amplifier!
The guard from Severomorsk pulls the uplink breaker. The interference dies.
RASMUS
Restore it.
GUARD
My children needed the water map. Those messages are someone else’s children.
No soldier moves against him.
AINO (RADIO)
North Four, transmit cooling schematic and live pressures.
IRINA
Sending open channel.
RASMUS
Encrypted to Kemi only.
IRINA
No single keeper.
She transmits to every verified station. The station’s failure becomes common work.
54.
INT. MULTIPLE TECHNICAL ROOMS — INTERCUT
A cooling schematic appears in Kemi, Moscow, Kyiv, Svalbard, and Tromsø.
MIKHAIL
Pump suction pressure oscillates. Gas pocket or blocked strainer.
YUSUF
Coolant mix flashes at lower pressure. Air separator may be isolated.
SIGNE
Valve Twelve shown open, temperature says closed.
AINO
North Four, physically verify Valve Twelve.
A technician runs to the cooling gallery.
TECHNICIAN (RADIO)
Indicator open. Stem not moving.
VEIKKO
Sheared coupling.
VIKTOR
Military bypass is behind panel Delta. Manual square drive.
KASK
How do you know?
VIKTOR
Same Russian standard as targeting shelters.
Knowledge born for war becomes a tool for preserving strangers’ messages.
55.
INT. MURMANSK NORTH FOUR — COOLING GALLERY — CONTINUOUS
Irina and a technician tear open Panel Delta. The manual drive is painted red beneath classified seals.
IRINA
Square key missing.
AINO (RADIO)
Measure socket.
TECHNICIAN
Nineteen millimeters.
MIKHAIL (RADIO)
Use maintenance wheel from waveguide purge manifold. Same standard.
They wrench off the wheel, fit it to the bypass, and turn.
Coolant surges. Air hammers through the separator.
YUSUF (RADIO)
Pressure rising. Hold bypass at forty percent.
IRINA
Archive inlet thirty-three... thirty-two.
Rack Three reappears in degraded mode.
ANYA (RADIO)
Messages returning.
Rasmus stands amid a rescue accomplished by every region he tried to subordinate.
56.
INT. MURMANSK NORTH FOUR — SATELLITE CONTROL — LATER
RASMUS
North Four acknowledges technical assistance.
AINO (RADIO)
Acknowledge open archive custody.
RASMUS
Operational security remains local.
IRINA
Station staff request a civic council and external mirrored logs.
RASMUS
You speak under duress from foreign interference.
GUARD
No foreign soldier is in this room.
Technicians and guards move beside Irina. Rasmus counts those still beside him: five.
IRINA
You may retain a security seat. One seat.
RASMUS
I do not request seats in systems I preserve.
IRINA
Then you request ownership.
He leaves the control room rather than sit.
No one arrests him. His authority ends where participation begins.
57.
INT. KYIV METRO — SIGNAL ROOM — DAY
With jamming ended, the full Day Thirty-One Dnipro packet decodes.
ANYA (RADIO)
Location: Arsenal service junction, lower west duct. Thirty-seven alive. Six medical. Air four days. Water entering.
OLENA
Timestamp?
ANYA (RADIO)
Seventy-one hours ago.
SASHA
West duct survey is already moving.
A final personal field opens.
TARAS (RECORDING)
Lena. If this reaches you, do not send the clinic after me. Send a map. We still have hands.
Olena grips the table.
TARAS (RECORDING)
Tell whoever hears this: thirty-seven. Not my name. Thirty-seven.
The message ends.
OLENA
He knew me.
SASHA
He knows you.
OLENA
Seventy-one hours ago.
Hope becomes an engineering deadline.
58.
INT. KYIV METRO — RESCUE CONTROL — CONTINUOUS
Sasha aligns Taras’s packet map with current flood models from North Four.
SASHA
If they remained at Arsenal junction, first flush reaches them in eleven hours.
RAIL WORKER
Dry service duct collapse here blocks our team.
MIKHAIL (RADIO)
Moscow has the same tunnel-vault design. There may be a cable gallery above the duct.
OLENA
Show it.
Mikhail draws from memory over the shared map.
MIKHAIL (RADIO)
Access behind ventilation plenum. Narrow. No stretchers.
OLENA
Then medical cases move through last after stabilization.
MIKHAIL (RADIO)
Children first if carbon dioxide high.
OLENA
Condition first. Age second.
Their old argument becomes a better procedure.
SASHA
Survey team has the route. Eight hours to junction.
59.
EXT. SVALBARD AIRPORT — DAY
The Twin Otter taxis with six hundred seed accessions under Spring Commons seals. Ingrid watches from the snowbank.
KARI
Tromsø, then Kemi. Weather marginal over coast.
INGRID
If cold-case temperature exceeds eight degrees—
KARI
Divert to Tromsø cold room. No heroic delivery.
INGRID
If communications fail—
KARI
Manifest has procedures. You cannot accompany every consequence.
Ingrid touches the cargo hatch once.
YUSUF
You are letting seeds leave.
INGRID
Duplicates.
YUSUF
You are still letting them leave.
The aircraft lifts. Unlike the end of the old world, stored futures travel outward.
INGRID
Yes.
60.
EXT. KALLIOJÄRVI OPEN PIT — DAY
The first melt surge reaches the diversion channel. Brown water carries ash, salt, and invisible contamination toward the pit.
AINO
Flow one point six cubic meters per second.
EEVA
Rising fast.
The lower berm leaks around a vehicle mat.
KASK
Add rock from west pile.
VIKTOR
West pile is fine tailings. It liquefies.
ELIAS
North waste rock. Longer haul.
A loader turns north.
Water overtops the unfinished clay lining and rushes toward a cable trench leading underground.
MAARJA
Trench breach!
Workers throw sandbags. Oskari sounds the warning siren from inside.
AINO
Close portal drain valve. Now.
The spring arrives with the force of a broken reservoir.
61.
INT. KALLIOJÄRVI MINE — PORTAL DRAIN — CONTINUOUS
Leena closes the drain valve. Contaminated water backs against the outer door instead of entering the refuge.
LEENA
Valve shut.
AINO (RADIO)
Monitor door pressure. Evacuate upper gallery.
The door bows inward by millimeters.
OSKARI
Pressure twelve kilopascals.
LEENA
You should be in lower refuge.
OSKARI
I can read twelve in both places.
Outside, Elias uses the tracked carrier to push rock into the breach. Viktor guides the blade from contaminated spray.
ELIAS
Viktor, fall back!
VIKTOR
Blade left half meter!
The rock seals the trench. Flow redirects toward the pit.
OSKARI
Pressure falling.
A child’s measurement confirms the mine remains dry.
62.
INT. MOSCOW METRO — CABLE CORRIDOR — DAY
Temporary credentials open the corridor. Zorin, Mikhail, and rescue workers move nine hidden survivors ahead of rising water.
ZORIN
Gate Four opens in twenty minutes.
SURVIVOR
Who decided?
MIKHAIL
Public flood plan. Your evacuation is now part of it.
SURVIVOR
We were not on the public map.
ZORIN
You are now.
He says it without asking forgiveness.
The last survivor cannot walk. Zorin gives up his place on a narrow cart and carries equipment.
MIKHAIL
Your credential expires in eight minutes.
ZORIN
Then stop talking like a clerk and push.
They clear the gate. Mikhail turns the wheel. Floodwater roars into the empty sector.
63.
INT. KYIV METRO — WEST CABLE GALLERY — NIGHT
Sasha’s rescue team crawls through the gallery above floodwater. A hammer answers ahead.
SASHA
Arsenal group, stand clear!
They cut through a thin service panel. Faces appear in stale darkness.
SURVIVOR
Thirty-seven.
SASHA
We count ourselves.
He enters. Six medical cases. Children. Rail workers. TARAS, gaunt, holding a hand pump on a failing air line.
TARAS
You brought a map.
SASHA
Your wife sent corrections.
Taras closes his eyes once, then keeps pumping.
TARAS
Condition first. Age second.
SASHA
She said that too.
Water rises below them. Rescue begins without reunion yet.
64.
MONTAGE — FIRST THAW
— Kalliojärvi’s contaminated runoff pours into the sacrificed open pit, not the refuge.
— Moscow’s nine uncounted survivors receive names on the public board as Gate Four carries floodwater away.
— Kyiv’s thirty-seven move through a cable gallery while Taras remains on the air pump until the last medical case passes.
— North Four technicians cool the satellite archive under a newly posted civic inventory. Rasmus watches from outside the control room.
— The Twin Otter crosses south with six hundred duplicate futures.
— In the mine greenhouse, empty trays wait beneath repaired crusher lamps.
INGRID (RADIO)
Spring Commons cargo, report condition.
KARI (RADIO)
Cold cases five point two degrees. Seals intact. Kemi in four hours.
AINO (RADIO)
Cultivation node ready. Water source isolated from first flush.
Across the network, spring is measured as hazard, route, and promise.
CUT TO BLACK.
65.
INT. KYIV METRO — WEST CABLE GALLERY — CONTINUOUS
Thirty-seven survivors crawl toward Sasha’s rescue team. Floodwater strikes the duct supports below.
SASHA
Medical cases at center. Everyone repeats the name ahead and behind.
Names move through darkness like a human checksum.
TARAS
Last stretcher cannot turn the elbow.
SASHA
Then transfer patient to drag sheet.
TARAS
Spinal injury.
OLENA (RADIO)
Log-roll with four. Maintain alignment. Describe breathing.
Taras hears her live for the first time.
TARAS
Lena?
OLENA (RADIO)
Condition first.
TARAS
Breathing shallow. Left side movement reduced.
Their reunion begins as a clinical report.
66.
INT. KYIV METRO — RESCUE EXIT — LATER
The thirty-seventh survivor clears the duct. Sasha marks the count before Taras emerges last.
Olena waits beyond the contaminated-water line. Taras stops two meters from her.
OLENA
Survey first.
TARAS
You always knew how to ruin an entrance.
A medic checks him. Dose acceptable. Fever low. Olena crosses the line.
They embrace without music, both listening for the other’s breathing.
TARAS
Thirty-seven.
OLENA
Thirty-seven.
She sees the hand-pump bruises on his palms.
OLENA
You sent me a map.
TARAS
You sent corrections.
Behind them, the first flush reaches the abandoned junction.
67.
EXT. KEMI AIRSTRIP — DAY
The Twin Otter lands through wet snow. AINO, EEVA, MAARJA, and two elected custodians wait beside portable cold power.
KARI
Cargo temperature five point eight. Seals intact.
Each of six hundred accessions is counted by case, not opened.
INGRID (RADIO)
Custody transfers to Kemi cultivation node under Spring Commons provisional rules.
AINO
Kemi accepts custody, not ownership.
MAARJA
Baltic soil records remain attached to relevant lots.
EEVA
No sowing until room and irrigation tests pass twice.
OSKARI holds a handwritten sign: SEEDS ARE NOT LUNCH.
KARI
That should be on the vault.
The first seed case crosses the same decontamination line the children crossed.
68.
INT. KALLIOJÄRVI MINE — GREENHOUSE HALL — DAY
Cold cases connect to redundant power. Eeva samples benches, water, air, and gloves.
EEVA
Room test one negative. Irrigation line negative. Second test tomorrow.
MINER
We wait another day?
EEVA
Seeds waited centuries.
AINO
The people did not.
EEVA
Then feed people from stores and protect the experiment that may feed them later.
Aino checks the energy ledger. Lamps cost village heat after dusk.
AINO
Photoperiod during hydro surplus only. We accept slower growth.
OSKARI
Plants follow the power schedule?
AINO
Everyone does.
Empty soil waits under dark lamps while food is served elsewhere.
69.
INT. MURMANSK NORTH FOUR — SERVICE GARAGE — DAY
RASMUS loads two vehicles with fuel, encrypted radios, and a portable satellite key module. Five loyalists remain.
LOYALIST
Station council revoked movement authority.
RASMUS
Councils revoke words. Keys revoke access.
LOYALIST
Where do we go?
RASMUS
Auxiliary tracking site at Olenya Ridge. Fiber to North Four. Independent generator.
LOYALIST
Abandoned since before the exchange.
RASMUS
Then no one has voted over it.
IRINA watches through the garage glass.
IRINA
The key module belongs to emergency relay custody.
RASMUS
Custody is what remains when authority becomes shy.
He drives into the thawing Arctic road.
70.
INT. NORTH FOUR — CIVIC COUNCIL — LATER
IRINA
Rasmus removed Uplink Key Module Two.
TECHNICIAN
Module One remains. No redundancy.
GUARD
We can pursue.
IRINA
With whose order?
The question delays them at the wrong time.
GUARD
Council security authorization.
COUNCILOR
Retrieve property without lethal force. Publish personnel, vehicles, fuel, and route.
GUARD
Publishing route warns him.
IRINA
Secrecy warns everyone else too late.
They approve pursuit by six to two.
IRINA
Notify the network. Ask Kemi what the key can do from Olenya Ridge.
Legitimacy moves slower than command, but it moves with witnesses.
71.
INT. MOSCOW METRO — RADIO ALCOVE — DAY
ANYA studies North Four hardware manuals with ZORIN.
ANYA
Module Two can sign uplink commands and decrypt regional packet groups.
ZORIN
It cannot command the satellite alone. Needs time reference and tracking data.
MIKHAIL
Olenya Ridge provides both.
ANYA
Can he erase stored messages?
ZORIN
He can mark packets delivered, perhaps overwrite queue priorities.
NATALIA
Meaning he can make messages disappear while claiming they were received.
ANYA
Kemi has the raw index. We would know what vanished.
ZORIN
Knowing is not restoring.
Anya begins building a command revocation packet.
ANYA
Then we revoke his key before the next pass.
72.
INT. KEMI RADAR SITE — CONTROL ROOM — DAY
VEIKKO
We can transmit through the old radar amplifier, once.
AINO
Once before what?
VEIKKO
Before it overheats or arcs through the feed.
ANYA (RADIO)
Revocation requires three signatures from independent custodians and exact satellite time.
IRINA (RADIO)
North Four signs.
INGRID (RADIO)
Svalbard signs.
AINO
Kemi signs only after public verification of command content.
RASMUS (RADIO)
You propose destroying emergency redundancy because I left a committee.
AINO
Return the module under witnessed custody.
RASMUS (RADIO)
Come collect it at Olenya Ridge.
He offers a negotiation site that is also a fortified uplink.
73.
INT. KYIV METRO — RECOVERY CLINIC — NIGHT
Taras eats broth while Olena checks thirty-seven survivor charts.
TARAS
You have not asked where I was between Day Six and Day Thirty-One.
OLENA
I have thirty-seven answers before yours.
TARAS
Good.
He watches her work.
TARAS
North Four used my message to pull you.
OLENA
It nearly worked.
TARAS
What stopped you?
OLENA
You did. ‘Thirty-seven. Not my name.’
He smiles, then weeps without warning.
TARAS
I thought I was leaving instructions for a widow.
OLENA
You left work for a doctor.
She sits beside him at last.
74.
INT. SPRING COMMONS — GENERAL ASSEMBLY — INTERCUT
The first accession routes are proposed. Colored lines extend beyond the four original regions.
INGRID
Kemi receives six hundred duplicates. Tromsø two hundred after cold-room validation. Ukrainian node requests drought lines.
AFRICAN VOICE
Sahel relay requests heat-tolerant millet index, not shipment yet.
CANADIAN VOICE
Nunavut station offers permafrost storage and Arctic soil data.
JAPANESE VOICE
Hokkaido agricultural station confirms greenhouse capacity.
Translation slows every sentence and improves it.
MAARJA
No region votes on another region’s food priorities.
INGRID
But viability data remains common.
OLENA
And shipments never outrank immediate medicine or water transport.
A worldwide network begins as carefully qualified verbs.
75.
INT. MOSCOW METRO — COUNCIL CHAMBER — DAY
Natalia proposes Moscow’s representation in the Spring Commons.
RESIDENT
Population weighting gives Moscow more votes.
NATALIA
And lets large shelters govern small ones.
ZORIN
Equal station votes let twelve people outvote twelve thousand.
MIKHAIL
Two chambers. People and nodes. Major allocation needs both.
RESIDENT
You are inventing a parliament underground.
NATALIA
We are inventing a way not to fight over filters.
ZORIN
Security emergencies?
NATALIA
Time-limited authority, published action, automatic review.
ZORIN
Slow.
NATALIA
You may submit improvements from your seat.
He sits before answering. The act is his answer.
76.
EXT. OLENYA RIDGE — TRACKING SITE — NIGHT
Rasmus’s vehicles reach a snow-buried radome. Meltwater cuts the access road behind them.
Inside, a diesel generator starts. A narrow dish turns toward the next orbital pass.
LOYALIST
Fiber link to North Four is dark.
RASMUS
Microwave backup?
LOYALIST
Kemi can see the carrier.
RASMUS
Then let them.
He installs the stolen key module.
RASMUS
Prepare a priority broadcast: continuity authority restored at Olenya Ridge. Message access available to affiliated regions.
LOYALIST
How many affiliated?
RASMUS
The first are always listening before they answer.
A distant pursuit vehicle appears on the lower road.
77.
INT. NORTH FOUR PURSUIT VEHICLE — SAME
IRINA rides with three council-authorized guards. Their published position is twenty minutes old.
GUARD
He knows our route.
IRINA
So do Kemi, Svalbard, Moscow, and every settlement between.
GUARD
They cannot stop an ambush.
IRINA
They can record who leaves it.
The road ahead has washed out. A culvert hangs over black water.
DRIVER
No crossing.
IRINA
Tracking site has an old cable tunnel from the east service road.
GUARD
How far on foot?
IRINA
Seven kilometers.
They report delay publicly, cache vehicle fuel, and continue with no possibility of surprise.
78.
INT. KALLIOJÄRVI MINE — GREENHOUSE HALL — DAY
Second contamination tests are negative. Six accession packets rest beside labeled trays.
EEVA
Rye, barley, field pea. Two duplicates remain cold. One enters trial.
OSKARI
Who plants?
AINO
The people maintaining the tray.
A miner, a Baltic farmer, Oskari, and Eeva each place measured seeds. No speeches.
MAARJA
Depth three centimeters.
OSKARI
This one is four.
EEVA
Move it. Hope does not excuse poor planting.
They cover the seeds. Aino records water lot, substrate, accession, hands.
ELIAS
Ceremony finished?
AINO
Now maintenance starts.
The lamps wake only when the hydro surplus allows.
79.
INT. KEMI RADAR SITE — EQUIPMENT ROOM — DAY
Veikko opens the radar transmitter. Burned insulation and old explosive damage surround one usable amplifier tube.
VEIKKO
One uplink burst at twenty kilowatts. Cooling water ninety seconds.
AINO
Command length?
ANYA (RADIO)
Forty-six seconds with three signatures.
VEIKKO
Then we have forty-four seconds of optimism.
VIKTOR
Olenya can preempt with higher power.
KASK
Unless its tracking time is wrong.
Viktor points to a Russian frequency plan.
VIKTOR
Countermeasure doctrine inserts false ephemeris to hostile receivers.
ANYA (RADIO)
We transmit a decoy acquisition time publicly and the real one through independent landlines.
AINO
A lie?
MAARJA
A feint with recorded purpose and expiry.
80.
INT. KEMI COUNCIL — LATER
DELEGATE
If we publish the feint afterward, Rasmus learns the method.
AINO
If we hide it, we create a secret command tool.
ELIAS
Publish after the pass, not before. Automatic release on timer.
KASK
Operational secrecy with expiration.
MAARJA
And witnesses from three nodes hold the real time separately.
VIKTOR
Do I qualify as technical operator?
DELEGATE
You qualify as supervised specialist. No custody of complete time.
VIKTOR
Recorded.
He accepts usefulness without access.
AINO
Approve decoy time, automatic disclosure, and one-use uplink?
Hands rise. The decision is slower than a secret and stronger after it expires.
81.
INT. OLENYA RIDGE — CONTROL ROOM — DAY
Rasmus receives Kemi’s public acquisition schedule.
LOYALIST
Pass at eighteen-forty-two.
RASMUS
Transmit preemption at eighteen-forty-one thirty.
LOYALIST
Amplifier has no coolant flow sensor.
RASMUS
Manual watch.
A second loyalist sees North Four’s pursuit report.
LOYALIST TWO
Council team seven kilometers east.
RASMUS
Lock cable tunnel.
LOYALIST TWO
Explosive closure?
RASMUS
Mechanical first.
He has learned the vocabulary of restraint without its purpose.
RASMUS
If breached, destroy uplink rack—not the archive module.
He intends to carry scarcity away again.
82.
INT. KYIV METRO — PLATFORM CLINIC — DAY
Taras helps label survivor records despite orders to rest.
OLENA
You have orthostatic hypotension.
TARAS
I have handwriting.
OLENA
Both can fail at once.
He sits.
TARAS
Will you go to the Spring Commons assembly?
OLENA
It is on radio.
TARAS
For now.
OLENA
You survived a month and immediately schedule my travel.
TARAS
I remember your complaints about romance.
Her wedding ring returns to her finger after surgery duty—not as closure, but continuation.
OLENA
We go nowhere until your thirty-seven have beds.
TARAS
Our thirty-seven.
83.
INT. SVALBARD — COLD ARCHIVE — DAY
Portable cold rooms hold the six hundred spaces sent south as empty, labeled positions.
YUSUF
We keep empty shelves for duplicates no longer here?
INGRID
We keep their location and status. Empty is information.
A second room test confirms fungal clearance.
EEVA (RADIO)
Approved for next cultivation trial.
INGRID
Kemi reports first sowing complete.
SECURITY CHIEF
If Kemi fails?
INGRID
Tromsø receives another duplicate. Hokkaido requests data. Failure becomes shared evidence.
The security chief studies the Spring Commons map.
SECURITY CHIEF
And if someone takes without reporting?
INGRID
Then the commons records a theft. It does not pretend locks make trust unnecessary.
84.
EXT. OLENYA RIDGE — CABLE TUNNEL — DUSK
Irina’s team reaches the tunnel door. Welded shut from inside.
GUARD
Mechanical closure.
IRINA
Ventilation intake on north wall. Maintenance crawlspace.
GUARD
Too narrow with armor.
IRINA
Then remove armor.
They strip plates and weapons to fit. One guard remains outside as witness and relay.
IRINA
No explosives near uplink or fuel. Disable people only if necessary.
GUARD
Rasmus may not agree.
IRINA
This is not a meeting.
They crawl toward the hum of an unauthorized transmitter.
85.
INT. KEMI RADAR SITE — UPLINK COUNTDOWN — NIGHT
Three signatures load: North Four civic council, Svalbard, Kemi. Power transfers from greenhouse lamps and nonessential heat.
VEIKKO
Real acquisition in sixty seconds.
ANYA (RADIO)
Decoy schedule releases automatically in four minutes.
AINO
Village heat minimum?
ELIAS
Holding.
MAARJA
Witness channels recording.
At Olenya, Rasmus aims at the decoy time, ninety seconds too late.
VIKTOR
Satellite rising. Doppler matches.
KASK
Movement outside perimeter.
Headlights appear on the Kemi access road—unidentified.
AINO
Technical team stays. Security verifies. No firing without target.
86.
EXT. KEMI RADAR SITE — SAME
Elias and Kask challenge two approaching snow vehicles. Occupants raise hands: Finnish reservists from a disconnected coastal bunker.
RESERVIST
We heard satellite traffic. Need shelter and insulin.
ELIAS
Weapons safe. Engines off.
A third vehicle remains dark behind them.
KASK
Thermal contact, tree line.
A rocket launches—not at people, but the radar feeder mast.
Kask fires at the flash. The rocket strikes lower structure. Power cables whip and arc.
ELIAS
Inside! Feeder attack!
The third vehicle retreats. Its radio authentication carries an old North Road suffix.
KASK
Rasmus has people here.
Inside, uplink power falls with twenty seconds remaining.
87.
INT. KEMI RADAR SITE — CONTINUOUS
VEIKKO
Feeder phase lost. Amplifier dropping.
AINO
Can we bridge from pedestal drive bus?
VEIKKO
Dish stops tracking.
VIKTOR
Coast-defense battery has flywheel backup, thirty seconds.
AINO
Connect.
Viktor opens the Russian countermeasure cabinet. A charged flywheel screams.
VEIKKO
Not synchronized.
VIKTOR
It will be for twelve seconds.
He closes the contact. The room shudders. Dish drive coasts while amplifier surges.
ANYA (RADIO)
Revocation transmitting. Forty-six percent. Sixty.
Smoke rises from the feed cabinet.
AINO
Hold until complete or fire.
VEIKKO
Those may be the same time.
88.
INT. OLENYA RIDGE — CONTROL ROOM — SAME
Rasmus begins preemption at the false time. The stolen key module flashes: REVOCATION PENDING.
LOYALIST
They transmitted early.
RASMUS
Override.
LOYALIST
Three-custodian command. Our key cannot supersede.
Irina’s team emerges from the ventilation crawlspace behind the rack.
IRINA
Power down uplink.
A loyalist turns with a weapon. The guard shoots the ceiling light. Darkness.
Rasmus pulls the key module and runs toward the archive exit.
IRINA
Do not fire at the module!
The uplink amplifier arcs. Fire climbs the cable tray.
LOYALIST
Suppression failed!
Rasmus disappears through smoke carrying a key becoming useless.
89.
INT. KEMI RADAR SITE — CONTINUOUS
ANYA (RADIO)
Ninety-two. Ninety-eight. Command acknowledged.
The amplifier explodes in a shower of ceramic and copper. Fire suppression floods the cabinet.
VEIKKO
Uplink dead.
AINO
Revocation?
ANYA (RADIO)
Accepted. Module Two invalid after this orbit.
The automatic disclosure releases the real timing, signatures, and purpose to every station.
MAARJA
Witness log complete.
Elias reports the attackers escaped, one coastal survivor wounded.
AINO
Greenhouse power?
ELIAS
Off. Temperature stable for thirty minutes.
AINO
Restore plants after medical load.
The satellite is open, but Kemi has spent its only voice upward.
90.
INT. OLENYA RIDGE — UPLINK HALL — CONTINUOUS
Irina’s team fights the cable fire with dry powder. One archive cache is trapped beyond flames.
IRINA
Copy drives first, then abandon room.
GUARD
Rasmus took Module Two.
IRINA
Revoked. Let him carry history’s least useful key.
A loyalist lies burned but alive. Irina drags him toward the exit.
LOYALIST
Why help me?
IRINA
Because custody includes people who were wrong.
The radome stops turning. Outside, Rasmus’s last vehicle descends into melt fog.
IRINA (RADIO)
Olenya Ridge secured. Uplink destroyed. Local cache damaged. Personnel count pending.
They win the station after losing the machine.
91.
INT. KALLIOJÄRVI MINE — GREENHOUSE HALL — NIGHT
Emergency power returns after thirty-two minutes. Eeva checks trays.
EEVA
Substrate lost two degrees. Acceptable.
OSKARI
The seeds did nothing.
EEVA
Correct.
OSKARI
How do we know they are alive?
EEVA
We wait.
Aino enters soot-streaked from the radar site.
AINO
Satellite key revoked. Uplink gone.
EEVA
Then the data?
AINO
Mirrored in nineteen regions.
OSKARI
So breaking the antenna did not break the message.
AINO
That was the design.
She touches the warm soil, unable to measure what has started beneath it.
92.
INT. NORTH FOUR — PUBLIC PLATFORM — DAY
Irina reports Olenya casualties and equipment loss. Rasmus is listed as MISSING, not enemy.
COUNCILOR
He attacked Kemi and fled with stolen equipment.
IRINA
Evidence links an old North Road suffix to the attack. Individual orders remain unverified.
GUARD
You are protecting him.
IRINA
I am protecting the record from what anger wants added.
The burned loyalist gives his name and confirms Rasmus ordered preemption, not the Kemi strike.
LOYALIST
He said allies near Kemi would disable the feeder.
IRINA
Names?
LOYALIST
No names.
Uncertainty stays public. The new council refuses a convenient complete villain.
93.
INT. KYIV METRO — PLATFORM — DAY
Taras walks with a cane past the board of thirty-seven rescued names.
TARAS
Satellite archive open?
OLENA
Index open. Uplink destroyed. Copies distributed.
TARAS
So the world spoke and broke the telephone.
SASHA
We still have radio.
A new signal arrives from a Romanian agricultural station requesting flood-resistant seed data.
OLENA
And more work.
TARAS
Will Kyiv join the Spring Commons?
OLENA
Medical assembly votes tonight. Agriculture tomorrow.
TARAS
Government by appointments.
OLENA
Civilization by minutes.
They walk together, slowly enough for neither to pretend recovery is complete.
94.
EXT. KEMI RADAR SITE — DAY
The damaged dish is fixed at the last satellite bearing. Aino inventories what survived.
VEIKKO
Receive chain intact. Transmitter destroyed. Pedestal motor damaged.
ELIAS
Can it receive again?
VEIKKO
If someone tells the satellite to speak.
ANYA (RADIO)
North Four retains Module One and operational uplink. Olenya cache may be salvageable.
AINO
Then redundancy remains two sites, not one.
MAARJA
Until someone makes a third.
Kask finds the attacker’s discarded launcher. Finnish serial plate, pre-war reserve stock.
KASK
Rasmus did not bring this from Estonia.
ELIAS
Someone here chose him.
The final enemy is not foreign. It is the desire to own necessity.
95.
INT. KEMI COUNCIL — LATER
A suspect list is sealed under civilian authority. Elias refuses emergency arrest power.
DELEGATE
You know the reserve network.
ELIAS
Which makes me investigator, not judge.
KASK
Attackers knew feeder layout and our challenge procedure.
VIKTOR
One spoke Russian authentication over Finnish hardware.
MAARJA
Rasmus builds coalitions out of grievance. Find who felt replaced by councils, migrants, or the Commons.
AINO
Interview openly where possible. Protect operational details. Publish arrests and evidence basis.
DELEGATE
And if they strike again?
ELIAS
We defend the node. We do not suspend the reason it exists.
He states the lesson of three films without naming it.
96.
MONTAGE — DISTRIBUTED SPRING
— North Four transmits satellite content keys under civic signatures.
— Olenya survivors salvage a tracking encoder from the burned uplink.
— Svalbard marks six hundred accessions IN SHARED CUSTODY.
— Moscow approves a two-chamber delegation model.
— Kyiv’s thirty-seven rescued survivors add their skills to the public board.
— Kemi repairs the feeder while the greenhouse remains on medical-priority power.
— Maarja compares the Finnish launcher serial against reserve inventories.
— Rasmus parks beneath an abandoned transmission tower and listens to the network continue without him.
In the mine, one tray’s soil lifts by the width of a seed.
OSKARI
Eeva.
A pale rye shoot breaks the surface.
CUT TO BLACK.
97.
INT. KEMI RESERVE DEPOT — RECORDS CAGE — DAY
MAARJA photographs the launcher serial beside an unbroken evidence seal. ELIAS turns brittle mobilization cards under a red lamp.
MAARJA
Launcher issued to Coastal Defense Company Seven, cache K-14.
ELIAS
Company dissolved during evacuation.
KASK
Commanding officer?
ELIAS
Lieutenant Jussi Korpela. Career logistics. Reserve captain after retirement.
A requisition bears KORPELA'S signature—and a later withdrawal of three launchers authorized after civilian councils formed.
MAARJA
He did not steal from the old state. He believes he is the old state.
ELIAS
K-14 is beneath the Merihovi coastal bunker.
The bunker reported forty-one survivors two weeks ago. Then silence.
98.
INT. KALLIOJÄRVI MINE — FOOD OFFICE — DAY
A wall becomes arithmetic: mouths, calories, diesel, lamp-hours, planting days. AINO and EEVA recalculate twice.
EEVA
Rye germinated. It is not food for at least ninety days.
AINO
Stores at present ration?
QUARTERMASTER
Forty-seven days. Fifty-three if labor drops.
EEVA
If labor drops, cultivation and pumping drop.
OSKARI
We planted six hundred boxes.
EEVA
We planted six accessions. The boxes are inheritance, not supper.
Aino draws a black gap between DAY 53 and EARLIEST HARVEST: thirty-seven days with no food.
AINO
Send the calculation. No optimism added.
The first green shoot casts a shadow across the empty weeks.
99.
EXT. COAST ROAD TO MERIHOVI — DAY
Elias leads two marked vehicles. Their route and warrant were broadcast before departure. Meltwater covers the road in mirrored sheets.
KASK
Public route gives them time to empty the bunker.
ELIAS
It also tells every checkpoint why we came.
A wire blocks the road. Not a trap—a field telephone tied to a post.
KORPELA (PHONE)
Turn back. Merihovi remains under Finnish continuity command.
ELIAS
You are sought for questioning in an attack on civilian infrastructure.
KORPELA (PHONE)
Foreign-controlled infrastructure.
ELIAS
The patients breathing from it are Finnish.
KORPELA (PHONE)
For now.
The line dies. Beyond the flooded road, the bunker flag comes down before anyone can see who lowered it.
100.
INT. SVALBARD — SPRING COMMONS MAP ROOM — DAY
Kemi's calorie gap appears beside eighteen other regional forecasts. Most lines end before their crops begin.
YUSUF
This is not a seed shortage. It is a time shortage.
INGRID
And a transport shortage.
CANADIAN VOICE
We have fish protein. No aviation fuel.
ROMANIAN VOICE
We have grain inland. Bridges are down.
HOKKAIDO VOICE
Greenhouse yield in sixty days, power permitting.
MAARJA (RADIO)
The Commons must include food already harvested, not only seed.
INGRID
Shared inventory invites seizure.
AINO (RADIO)
Hidden inventory invites rumors. Rumors travel without fuel.
Ingrid opens a new ledger: SURVIVAL BRIDGE—OFFERS, NEEDS, ROUTES, WITNESSES.
101.
INT. MERIHOVI COASTAL BUNKER — MOTOR POOL — DAY
The bunker is nearly empty. JUSSI KORPELA, sixties, immaculate despite ruin, supervises generators loaded onto army trucks.
SOLDIER
Civilians in lower ward cannot travel.
KORPELA
Leave one generator and seven days' fuel.
SOLDIER
Their nurse says twelve.
KORPELA
Then she has seven days to join an authorized shelter.
RASMUS emerges from beneath the hood of a snow-streaked vehicle.
RASMUS
Kemi will publish every generator and invite nineteen claimants.
KORPELA
Kemi abandoned national command.
RASMUS
Then restore command where it lives—in the switches.
He unfolds a pre-war diagram of the Kemi hydro distribution ring.
102.
INT. KYIV METRO — MEDICAL ASSEMBLY — NIGHT
OLENA reads the Spring Commons articles aloud while TARAS counts votes from a chair.
OLENA
No shipment creates ownership of the receiving node. No emergency authority survives its published expiry.
SURGEON
If Moscow sends medicine, Moscow receives our votes?
OLENA
No.
SURGEON
Then why would they send it?
TARAS
Because disease also crosses borders without a passport.
A survivor from the rescued thirty-seven raises her hand.
SURVIVOR
Add that rescue debt cannot be collected as obedience.
OLENA
Accepted as amendment.
Kyiv ratifies, twenty-nine to six. No applause. The result is transmitted with the dissent attached.
103.
INT. MOSCOW METRO — TWO-CHAMBER SESSION — NIGHT
On one side: population delegates. On the other: station delegates. The same proposal must survive both.
ZORIN
Kemi asks for bridge food. Moscow has none to export.
NATALIA
We can offer fungal culture, rail maps, and repair crews.
RESIDENT
Skills are not calories.
MIKHAIL
Skills move calories.
The population chamber approves. The station chamber ties.
ZORIN
My station votes yes.
NATALIA
You argued against it.
ZORIN
I argued that the promise must be honest. Now it is.
Moscow ratifies. Zorin signs beneath Natalia, their names equally small.
104.
INT. MERIHOVI BUNKER — SIGNAL ROOM — NIGHT
Rasmus listens as Kyiv and Moscow ratifications cross shortwave. Korpela pins old unit markers around Kemi.
KORPELA
They call surrender a commons.
RASMUS
Do not attack the seeds. That makes martyrs and solves nothing.
KORPELA
Then what?
RASMUS
Kemi's council governs because it distributes heat, water, and light. Take distribution, and every vote becomes a request.
KORPELA
Under Finnish command.
RASMUS
Under competent command.
The distinction passes between them. Each assumes it will be settled later.
RASMUS
North switching station. No explosives. We need the grid alive.
105.
INT. KEMI COUNCIL — DAY
The Spring Commons articles are projected beside Kemi's thirty-seven-day food gap.
DELEGATE
Ratification exposes our stores and weakness.
MAARJA
Everyone already knows we are weak. The question is whether weakness becomes a market or a pact.
VIKTOR
A pact cannot stop an armed convoy.
LIISA
Neither did your army.
Viktor absorbs it.
AINO
We join without assigning our seed custody, grid, or courts to anyone else.
ELIAS (RADIO)
Merihovi evacuated its mobile power. Korpela has Rasmus's vehicle.
The room understands the attack and the vote are now the same question.
AINO
Take the vote.
Kemi ratifies as warning sirens begin aboveground.
106.
EXT. KEMI NORTH SWITCHING STATION — DUSK
A relief convoy arrives under Finnish markings, broadcasting correct obsolete challenge codes. The gate team sees insulin cases.
GUARD
Manifest?
DRIVER
Merihovi medical evacuation. Cold chain failing.
The first case really contains insulin. The second contains rifles.
Korpela's soldiers disarm the gate without firing. Rasmus enters the control house with two technicians.
KORPELA
No damage. No executions. Personnel may continue work under continuity orders.
GRID OPERATOR
The council did not issue these orders.
KORPELA
That is the defect we are correcting.
Rasmus closes an islanding breaker. Half of Kemi goes dark.
107.
INT. KALLIOJÄRVI MINE — MAIN GALLERY — CONTINUOUS
Lights vanish. Emergency strips glow red. Ventilation slows into a descending mechanical moan.
AINO
Load status.
QUARTERMASTER
Battery: medical twenty-six minutes, ventilation forty if separated, pumps eighteen.
EEVA
Greenhouse cold tolerance six hours. Irrigation can stop.
MINER
Lower sump cannot.
Aino erases GREENHOUSE from the emergency board.
OSKARI
The shoots will die.
AINO
People die first.
EEVA
And if we save them correctly, we can plant again.
They carry lamp batteries past green leaves into the clinic.
108.
INT. KEMI NORTH SWITCHING STATION — CONTROL ROOM — NIGHT
Rasmus uses the grid voice channel. His words enter every shelter through emergency speakers.
RASMUS
Power will be restored when Kemi recognizes a temporary continuity administration.
AINO (RADIO)
Define temporary.
RASMUS
Until food security and civil order are established.
AINO (RADIO)
By whom?
RASMUS
Qualified command.
AINO (RADIO)
Names. Powers. Expiry. Review.
Korpela reaches for the microphone. Rasmus holds it away.
RASMUS
Restore acknowledgment first.
KORPELA
You said the switches create authority.
RASMUS
They create compliance. Authority takes longer.
Korpela finally hears the doctrine without disguise.
109.
INT. SVALBARD — COMMUNICATIONS HALL — NIGHT
Kemi's carrier fades behind grid noise. Nineteen nodes remain connected to one another.
INGRID
We cannot command inside Finland.
IRINA (RADIO)
We can deny recognition and preserve Kemi's public record.
NATALIA (RADIO)
Moscow offers grid engineers.
OLENA (RADIO)
Kyiv offers trauma protocols and no soldiers.
MAARJA (RADIO)
Baltic convoy members inside Kemi are not foreign leverage. They are residents under the same blackout.
YUSUF
Put every offer on the open channel. No bargain with the occupiers.
Ingrid writes the first Commons emergency resolution: A NODE UNDER COERCION RETAINS ITS VOICE.
110.
INT. KALLIOJÄRVI MINE — PUMP LEVEL — NIGHT
ELIAS returns through an ore access and joins miners hand-starting an old diesel pump. It coughs but will not catch.
MINER
Fuel gelled in the line.
ELIAS
Warm the filter against your body.
They pass the metal filter under coats. Cold water creeps over boot soles.
KASK
North station holds the hydro feed. South line was dismantled after the strikes.
ELIAS
Not dismantled. Cable remains in Tunnel Twelve.
KASK
Map marks it flooded.
ELIAS
Map marks it uninspected.
The pump catches. They gain minutes, not safety.
ELIAS
Find Veikko. We build a path they do not control.
111.
INT. NORTH SWITCHING STATION — BREAK ROOM — NIGHT
Korpela's soldiers share rations with captured operators. One soldier, MIKA, recognizes a voice on the emergency channel.
NURSE (RADIO)
Merihovi lower ward to any station. Generator fuel exhausted early. Eleven immobile patients.
MIKA
You left them one generator.
KORPELA
Seven days' fuel.
MIKA
The gauge was wrong.
RASMUS
Kemi can dispatch after acknowledgment.
KORPELA
Restore the coastal feeder.
RASMUS
That surrenders leverage.
KORPELA
Those are Finnish civilians.
RASMUS
So are the ones teaching you obedience.
Mika quietly unlocks a captured operator's wrist restraint.
112.
INT. MOSCOW METRO — ENGINEERING BAY — NIGHT
ZORIN and ANYA reconstruct Kemi's grid from damaged manuals and spoken descriptions.
ANYA
Tunnel Twelve cable is de-energized at both ends.
ZORIN
Insulation after flooding? Unknown.
VEIKKO (RADIO)
We can megger sections manually. Two kilometers underground.
MIKHAIL
How long before pumps fail?
AINO (RADIO)
Seventy minutes at current inflow.
ZORIN
Then do not test two kilometers. Divide at every junction, isolate faults, energize the longest clean sections.
ANYA
A distributed grid.
ZORIN
A damaged grid. Do not make philosophy from copper.
Yet nineteen stations copy the repair method as he speaks.
113.
INT. KALLIOJÄRVI — TUNNEL TWELVE — NIGHT
Elias, Veikko, Kask, and three miners wade through black water carrying test sets above their heads.
VEIKKO
Section A clean. Section B leakage high.
They reach a collapsed junction. A cable disappears beneath rock.
KASK
End of route.
Elias sees fresh scrape marks on a maintenance door.
ELIAS
No. Beginning of theirs.
Behind the door: a new control wire spliced onto the dead cable, leading toward North Station.
VEIKKO
Remote trip circuit. If we energize, they kill it.
ELIAS
Then we give them a circuit to kill.
He marks the hostile wire but does not cut it.
114.
INT. NORTH SWITCHING STATION — CONTROL ROOM — NIGHT
A warning lamp shows voltage rising on Tunnel Twelve.
RASMUS
They found the south cable. Trip it.
GRID OPERATOR
Remote trip will arc at the flooded junction.
RASMUS
Then their attempt ends visibly.
KORPELA
People are in that tunnel.
RASMUS
People are always placed between power and consequence.
He orders a loyalist to the relay. Korpela blocks him.
KORPELA
No deliberate electrical strike.
RASMUS
Captain, either command is indivisible or it is theater.
KORPELA
Lieutenant. Finland did not promote me after dying.
Rasmus draws his pistol. The coalition ends exactly where control must be shared.
115.
INT. KEMI COUNCIL — EMERGENCY CHAMBER — NIGHT
Battery lamps illuminate delegates, patients, and a live open microphone. Aino refuses evacuation to the deeper mine.
DELEGATE
If you are captured, council continuity fails.
AINO
Then continuity is designed badly.
LIISA
Rasmus wants one signature. Do not turn yours into a throne by protecting it.
Aino hands three sealed authority cards to three unrelated residents.
AINO
Medical load decisions to Eeva. Defense to Elias under published limits. Negotiation requires any two council witnesses.
VIKTOR
And you?
AINO
I operate a radio.
She removes the title plate from her place and leaves the chair empty.
116.
INT. SVALBARD — GENERAL ASSEMBLY — INTERCUT
Fourteen regions have ratified. Five observe. Each appears as a voice, waveform, or handwritten relay.
INGRID
Resolution: no recognition of authority obtained by withholding essential systems.
AFRICAN VOICE
Add: essential aid cannot require political alignment.
CANADIAN VOICE
Add independent verification of declared need.
OLENA
Add that verification cannot delay immediate lifesaving care.
NATALIA
Moscow accepts.
IRINA
North Four accepts.
AINO (RADIO)
Kemi accepts if you also record this: we may fail tonight.
INGRID
Recorded.
The Spring Commons is ratified not at a celebration, but while one member is being strangled.
117.
INT. NORTH SWITCHING STATION — CONTINUOUS
Rasmus holds Korpela at gunpoint. Mika and two soldiers aim uncertainly. Grid operators flatten against panels.
RASMUS
Trip Tunnel Twelve.
KORPELA
Restore Merihovi first.
RASMUS
Your country is a memory with a flag. Power is present tense.
Korpela looks at the old Finnish crest on his sleeve, then at the operator he bound.
KORPELA
Mika. Continuity Order Seven: protect civilian life and critical works.
MIKA
From whom?
KORPELA
From us.
Mika turns his weapon on Rasmus. Rasmus fires first, striking Korpela in the shoulder, and slams the remote trip.
118.
INT. TUNNEL TWELVE — SAME
The planted control wire snaps alive. Elias sees the test lamp flare.
ELIAS
Down!
The flooded junction erupts blue-white. Steam punches through the corridor. Kask drags Veikko clear.
But the energized section was a short decoy, isolated from their real bypass.
VEIKKO
They spent the trip relay.
ELIAS
Real line now.
A miner closes a manual knife switch with a timber pole. Current takes the longer dry branch.
ANYA (RADIO)
Frequency rising. Hold load below forty percent.
Far below, the sump pumps begin to turn.
119.
INT. NORTH SWITCHING STATION — CONTINUOUS
Gunfire shatters instruments. Korpela collapses. Mika tackles Rasmus before he can fire again.
Rasmus reaches the master breaker and opens it. Turbines unload with a distant concussion.
GRID OPERATOR
He separated the north ring!
Rasmus escapes through the cable basement as Korpela's soldiers choose wounded people over pursuit.
KORPELA
Do not let him reach the hydro gate controls.
MIKA
Medic!
KORPELA
Broadcast surrender first.
Mika keys the open channel.
MIKA
North Station garrison relinquishes weapons to Kemi civilian custody. Commander Korpela wounded. Rasmus escaped east.
The confession reaches the same network the attack meant to silence.
120.
INT. KALLIOJÄRVI MINE — CLINIC / PUMP LEVEL — INTERCUT
Power returns in fragments. A ventilator starts; a pump stops; an electrician sheds greenhouse heat; the pump starts again.
EEVA
Clinic stable on branch three.
VEIKKO (RADIO)
Do not connect greenhouse. Frequency margin two percent.
OSKARI
How long without heat?
EEVA
Longer than the child without oxygen.
Oskari wraps germination trays in salvaged blankets.
OSKARI
Then we keep them warm without electricity.
Around him, miners add coats, insulation, and their own body heat to a room of seedlings.
Survival becomes neither command nor miracle, but thousands of small reallocations.
121.
EXT. MERIHOVI COASTAL BUNKER — PRE-DAWN
A Kemi medical convoy arrives under the Commons emergency resolution. No flag leads it.
NURSE
Who authorized you?
DRIVER
Your distress call. Kemi clinic. Moscow routing map. Svalbard fuel allocation.
Portable oxygen enters as eleven patients come out.
NURSE
Korpela abandoned us.
DRIVER
Korpela ordered your feeder restored after he lost control of it.
NURSE
Does that forgive him?
DRIVER
No. It keeps the record accurate.
The last patient is carried past the lowered national flag.
122.
INT. KEMI NORTH SWITCHING STATION — DAWN
Weapons lie numbered on the floor. Liisa records testimony while Eeva treats Korpela under guard.
KORPELA
I authorized seizure of the station and the radar feeder attack.
LIISA
Did you authorize casualties?
KORPELA
I told myself infrastructure was not violence.
LIISA
And Rasmus?
KORPELA
Hydro gatehouse. He has the maintenance cipher.
ELIAS
How?
KORPELA
I gave it to him.
No one offers absolution for his late change.
KORPELA
My people surrendered.
LIISA
That will also be in the record.
123.
INT. SVALBARD — SURVIVAL BRIDGE DESK — DAY
Offers become routes. A Romanian grain train can reach Lviv. Baltic fishing vessels can reach Kemi. Moscow can repair two rail diesels.
YUSUF
Even if every route succeeds, Kemi receives twelve days.
INGRID
And Kyiv?
YUSUF
Nine. Moscow six. North Four fourteen.
INGRID
We are distributing insufficiency.
MAARJA (RADIO)
Distribute time. Different crops mature at different dates. Different waters thaw at different dates.
AINO (RADIO)
No secret bilateral deals. Publish who eats less so another node reaches harvest.
A new document begins: THE BRIDGE CALENDAR.
124.
INT. KYIV METRO — PLATFORM KITCHEN — DAY
Taras watches ladles shrink by one measured centimeter. The saved portion is sealed for northern shipment.
COOK
We ration people who already ration.
OLENA
Voluntary contribution only.
SURVIVOR
Voluntary under a public list becomes shame.
Olena removes donor names. Only quantities remain.
TARAS
Anonymous sacrifice. Bureaucracy finally discovers poetry.
OLENA
It discovered privacy.
He adds his portion, then sees her stare.
TARAS
Doctor?
OLENA
Half. Recovery is also common infrastructure.
He returns half to his bowl.
125.
INT. KALLIOJÄRVI MINE — GREENHOUSE HALL — DAY
Power remains off. Condensation freezes along the outer wall. Eeva unwraps the trays one by one.
OSKARI
How many?
EEVA
Do not count before assessment.
Several shoots have folded. Others stand beneath improvised reflective foil.
EEVA
Eleven percent loss in the first rye tray. Peas uncertain.
AINO
Can we still reach harvest?
EEVA
A harvest. Not enough harvest.
She places the original black gap chart beside the living trays.

Germination was the easy proof. Calories are the hard one.
Outside, hydro power fluctuates as Rasmus approaches the gatehouse.

EXT. KEMI HYDRO RESERVOIR — DUSK
Rasmus walks alone across the dam service deck, wounded hand wrapped around Korpela's cipher unit. Spring water presses against concrete.
Below, Elias's vehicles stop beyond rifle range. Their position is broadcast openly.
ELIAS (LOUDSPEAKER)
Rasmus. Step away from the gate controls.
RASMUS
You built a world where nobody commands. Let us see whether water agrees.
AINO (RADIO)
Opening the spill gates cuts generation and floods the lower road.
RASMUS
Then recognize continuity authority.
AINO (RADIO)
No.
He enters the gatehouse. Steel doors close between him and every consequence.

A Common Spring
Finale Treatment
Approximate screenplay span: Pages 128–145
Final movement: “The First Common Hearing” / “The Bridge Arrives” / “A Common Spring”
The finale does not end with a military victory, a new flag, or a speech announcing that humanity has learned its lesson. It ends with a fragile public agreement, shared labor, and food divided according to need. Reconciliation is achieved through accountability—not forgetting.
Sequence 1 — The Grid Goes Dark
Night settles over Kemi. The rebuilt electrical network hums beneath the city, carrying power from the northern hydro stations to the harbor, hospital, radio tower and Kalliojärvi greenhouse.
Then entire districts go black.
At the Kemi North Switching Station, Aino discovers that the failure is deliberate. The Continuity faction has taken control of the grid. Former Colonel Korpela has invoked an emergency protocol written before the war. Under that protocol, the remaining government can commandeer power, food, transport and communications without civilian consent.
Korpela insists that reconstruction has become too important to be left to competing communities. Svalbard’s seeds, the Baltic convoys and the Moscow–Kyiv tunnel network must be placed under one authority.
Rasmus stands beside him.
Aino realizes that Rasmus has given Korpela access to the northern grid in exchange for recognition as the provisional commander of the Arctic territories.
Kalliojärvi loses its grow lights. The hospital switches to batteries. The global radio uplink begins shutting down.
At the mine, Elias and Veikko discover that the old manual bypass in Tunnel Twelve could restore power—but floodwater has made the route almost impassable.
Aino contacts the four regions through emergency radio.
AINO
This is not a power failure. Someone has decided that survival belongs to whoever controls the switch.
The transmission cuts out.
Sequence 2 — No Single Relay
At North Four station in Svalbard, Ingrid orders the satellite dishes redirected toward Kemi. Irina refuses. Redirecting every surviving satellite through one station would violate the network’s founding rule: no community can become the single point through which everybody else must speak.
Rasmus arrives at the station and demands control of the uplink. He argues that the rule was useful when the settlements were isolated, but civilization now requires a centre.
Irina answers that civilization once had many centres. Most of them became targets.
Ingrid supports her.
The satellite network begins distributing its routing keys among Kemi, Svalbard, the Baltic convoy and the Moscow–Kyiv metro network. Each settlement will hold only part of the system. No one community can control or silence it alone.
Rasmus warns that such a network will be slow, argumentative and impossible to command.
INGRID
Exactly.
For the first time, Rasmus understands that Ingrid does not intend Svalbard to become the capital of the surviving world. The seed vault was never a throne.
It was a library.
And a library belongs to everyone who can keep it alive.
Sequence 3 — Tunnel Twelve
Elias and Veikko enter the flooded mine passage.
The sequence is nearly wordless. The men move through chest-deep black water, following electrical cables bolted into the rock. Their headlamps provide the only light.
Veikko admits that the bypass was designed for a shutdown caused by war. He never imagined they would use it against their own surviving government.
Elias answers that governments are also machines. When they stop serving people, someone must know where the manual controls are.
They reach the bypass chamber. The wheel is corroded and partly submerged. Turning it will reconnect Kalliojärvi to the hydroelectric line, but it could also send a destructive surge through the damaged station.
Elias radios Yusuf in Kemi. Yusuf calculates that the grid can survive one attempt.
The radio begins to fail.
Before the signal disappears, Elias hears voices from Moscow, Kyiv, the Baltics and Svalbard repeating the same information through different relays. The decentralized network is already operating.
They are not receiving orders.
They are helping him solve the problem.
Elias and Veikko turn the wheel together.
The mine lights return one row at a time.
In the greenhouse, dim amber lamps flicker above the newly planted soil.
Sequence 4 — The Dam
Restoring the mine is not enough. Korpela still controls the main hydroelectric station. If he opens the emergency spillway completely, he can cut power to Kemi and destroy the lower transport route.
Rasmus travels to the dam ahead of Aino’s people.
Elias follows him into the gatehouse.
Rain and snowmelt pound the concrete structure. The river has risen against the gates. Rasmus stands above the emergency controls while Elias approaches along the lower platform.
Rasmus says the settlements will tear themselves apart without centralized authority. Every ration dispute, every missing medicine case and every contested seed shipment has proven his point.
Elias does not disagree.
That unsettles Rasmus.
Elias says people are frightened, selfish and capable of terrible things. But if survival requires surrendering every choice to the person holding the switch, then they have reconstructed the world that destroyed itself.
RASMUS
You think a meeting will stop hunger?
ELIAS
No. Food stops hunger. A meeting decides who eats first.
Rasmus could still release the water.
Instead, he takes his hand away from the controls.
It is not redemption. It is the first decision he has made without demanding authority in return.
Aino arrives with civilian engineers. She does not thank Rasmus or promise him forgiveness. She tells him he will accompany them back to Kemi and answer publicly for what he has done.
Rasmus accepts.
The dam remains open at its normal level. Electricity begins flowing south.
Sequence 5 — The Broken Radio
The global uplink requires one final component: a frequency stabilizer from the radio Aino carried out of the mine during The Long Night.
The radio has followed her through the entire trilogy. Its casing is cracked. Its original battery is dead. One tuning dial is missing. It once carried the first uncertain human voice through the darkness.
Yusuf opens it on the control-room table.
Aino hesitates. The radio is one of the last objects she possesses from the first days underground. Removing the stabilizer will destroy it permanently.
Yusuf tells her that he can search for another component, but there may not be time. The satellite window will close before the next rotation.
Aino removes the radio’s back plate herself.
Inside, beneath corrosion and dust, the stabilizer remains intact.
AINO
It did what we needed then.
She hands it to Yusuf.
AINO (CONT'D)
Let it do what we need now.
He installs the component into the uplink.
The broken radio from Film I becomes the heart of the final transmission.
Sequence 6 — Mikhail’s Confession
Before the four regions can recognize a common agreement, Olena insists that the hidden records from Moscow must be made public.
Mikhail has spent years selectively releasing information—enough to keep people alive, never enough to expose his own role in the prewar command system. He helped maintain the communication infrastructure that concealed military preparations and civilian casualty estimates.
He did not launch the war. But he helped create the silence in which it became possible.
Mikhail asks Olena whether confession will improve a single harvest.
Olena replies that secrecy is one of the things they are trying to stop cultivating.
At the Moscow–Kyiv relay, survivors gather around a battered microphone. Anya stands beside Mikhail. Sasha and Taras listen from Kyiv.
Mikhail transmits the complete archive.
He identifies what he did, what he knew and what he chose not to know. He provides the names of officials and officers when the records support the accusation. When the records do not, he says so.
He does not ask for forgiveness.
When he finishes, Olena adds the Ukrainian casualty records and the documented abuses committed by surviving Ukrainian units during the migration years. The truth will not belong to one side.
Their combined archive is copied simultaneously to Kemi, Svalbard and the Baltic mobile library.
No single government can erase it.
Sequence 7 — The First Common Hearing
The survivors gather inside a converted Kemi rail depot.
There is no ceremonial stage. The delegations sit around a circular arrangement of salvaged tables. Miners, tunnel survivors, Baltic travelers and Arctic scientists occupy the same level.
At the centre are three things:
- The public archive.
- The shared map of surviving routes.
- A sealed case containing duplicate seeds.
Rasmus and Korpela face formal charges for taking unauthorized control of the grid and threatening essential civilian infrastructure. Viktor faces questions concerning the relay keys he concealed during the northern crisis. Mikhail’s confession is entered into the record.
Each accused person is allowed to answer.
Maarja insists on this when angry survivors demand immediate punishment. A hearing without a defense, she says, is only revenge written down.
The proceedings are transmitted live through the distributed radio network. The names of the dead are entered before the names of the officials.
Korpela argues that emergency rule was legally justified. Aino asks him which surviving citizens consented to the law.
He cannot answer.
Rasmus does not defend the seizure. He describes his fear that the settlements would fragment, then acknowledges that he used that fear to make himself indispensable.
RASMUS
I told myself I was building a bridge.
I made certain I was the only man allowed to cross it.
The hearing does not absolve him. Rasmus loses any command authority and is assigned to supervised reconstruction work. Korpela is removed from public office pending further testimony. Viktor is required to disclose every remaining key and document his actions for the archive.
Mikhail’s technical knowledge remains necessary, but access to the communications system will always require a second authorized operator from another community.
These are not perfect judgments. Several survivors consider them too lenient; others consider them vindictive.
The disagreement is preserved in the record.
That preservation becomes the hearing’s real achievement.
Sequence 8 — The Agreement
The delegates begin drafting a temporary common charter.
They refuse to call it a constitution. The word feels too permanent for a world still counting its living.
The agreement contains only essential principles:
Power grids, seed stores, medicine reserves and communications cannot be controlled by a single settlement.
Emergency authority expires automatically unless renewed through public consent.
Maps, inventories, hearings and ration records remain open.
No accusation can be erased, but no person inherits guilt merely through nationality.
Every community contributes something before it receives a permanent vote—not as payment, but as proof that membership means responsibility.
The Baltic convoy contributes transport.
Moscow contributes engineering records and machine parts.
Kyiv contributes medical training and water-purification knowledge.
Svalbard contributes duplicate seed collections and climate data.
Kalliojärvi contributes power, metalwork and protected growing space.
Maarja notices that the charter still refers to “Finnish,” “Russian,” “Ukrainian,” “Baltic” and “Arctic” sectors.
She crosses out the word sectors.
She replaces it with communities.
No one applauds. They are too tired, and too conscious of what remains unresolved.
One by one, they sign.
Sequence 9 — The Bridge Arrives
Spring breaks across the north.
The “bridge” is not one structure. It is a chain of repaired roads, shortwave repeaters, boats, rail segments and human couriers. Each link reaches only as far as the next community.
A repaired Estonian tug enters Kemi harbor carrying families, radio parts and medical supplies. Its hull is scarred from the Baltic journey.
At a northern rail crossing, a maintenance engine arrives carrying machine tools recovered from the Moscow metro.
In Kyiv, Taras hears voices relayed from Kemi without passing through Moscow.
At North Four, satellite dishes turn toward the horizon as Svalbard sends crop data south.
Along the route, operators repeat the names of the next station and the previous station. “Names through darkness” become a human checksum. If a link fails, the neighboring stations know exactly who is missing.
Maarja stands at the harbor as the Baltic survivors disembark.
Aino joins her.
Neither woman calls the arrival a rescue. The people stepping onto the dock have brought as much as they will receive.
The bridge has arrived because everyone built part of it.
Sequence 10 — A Library Becomes a Garden
Ingrid supervises the opening of the Svalbard seed cases at Kalliojärvi.
Every case is opened in front of witnesses. Every packet is recorded. Half of each viable sample will be planted. The remainder will be divided among separate regional stores.
Aino asks whether this will reduce their chance of success. Ingrid says it will.
A single protected store would be more efficient.
It would also give one community the power to hold the future hostage.
INGRID
The vault was built to preserve possibility.
Possibility is useless until someone risks it in the ground.
Eeva, Oskari and the greenhouse workers prepare the first beds. The ore-processing hall that once extracted wealth from the earth now returns life to it.
The first rye seeds are planted by many hands.
Some belong to miners. Some to former soldiers. Some to people who once lived on opposite sides of the front.
No hand is presented as purer than another.
Sequence 11 — The First Bread
Months pass.
The first harvest is small. Much of the crop has failed. Several beds are diseased, and the yield is far below what the settlements need.
But there is enough rye for one ceremonial loaf.
The Commons debates what to do with it. Some want to preserve it. Some want it sent to the sick. Others want portions delivered to every region.
Olena ends the argument by asking the bakers to divide it according to the ration system already adopted.
Need, not rank.
The first pieces go to the hospital and the youngest malnourished survivors. The remaining bread is divided among the workers who produced it and the delegations preparing to carry duplicate seeds home.
At a long outdoor table, Aino, Maarja, Elias, Viktor, Olena, Mikhail, Ingrid, Yusuf and the other survivors share what remains.
Rasmus sits farther down the table under supervision. He is not excluded, but neither is he restored to his former status. He receives the same ration as every other laborer.
Mikhail and Olena sit opposite one another.
There is no grand reconciliation between them. Mikhail passes her the bread. Olena accepts it.
That simple gesture carries everything they cannot yet say.
Final Sequence — The Signal
Near sunset, Yusuf connects the repaired uplink.
The machine contains parts from Finland, Estonia, Russia, Ukraine and Svalbard. At its centre is the stabilizer taken from Aino’s broken radio.
The communities prepare a final transmission.
They do not announce a government. They do not claim to represent humanity.
They send three things:
Their coordinates.
Their survival rules.
And the names of everyone currently listening.
Across four landscapes, spring water begins to move.
It runs through the thawing channels outside Kalliojärvi.
It drips through broken stone into the Kyiv metro.
It carries ice away from the Moscow tunnels.
It cuts dark lines through snow in Svalbard and follows the Baltic roads toward the sea.
Aino stands before the microphone holding a single head of rye.
Maarja asks what she intends to say.
Aino studies the grain. Every kernel is descended from something preserved in darkness by people who never knew their names.
She presses the transmit switch.
AINO
This is Kalliojärvi calling through the Common Network.
We have power tonight.
We have water.
We have planted enough to begin again.
She pauses.
Voices from Moscow, Kyiv, the Baltics and Svalbard confirm the message, one after another.
Aino raises the rye closer to the microphone. The dry kernels move softly against one another.
The sound resembles radio static.
Then, beneath it, comes another transmission—faint, distant and not from any known station.
Everyone at the table becomes still.
Yusuf adjusts the receiver.
A voice emerges from somewhere beyond their map.
The words are indistinct. The identity is unknown.
But it is unmistakably human.
Aino does not answer alone.
She looks around the table. Maarja, Olena, Mikhail, Ingrid, Viktor, Elias and Yusuf move closer to the microphone.
Together, in their different accents and languages, they give their names.
The signal travels outward.
Final image
A head of rye rests beside the dismantled casing of the Film I radio.
Beyond it, green shoots emerge through the industrial ground. In the distance, the satellite dishes slowly turn beneath the Arctic sky.
Spring water runs across four landscapes.
CUT TO BLACK.
The faint unknown voice continues over darkness.
END OF A COMMON SPRING.
